National League Game Summary - Cincinnati at Milwaukee

Final Score: Cincinnati 8 - Milwaukee 2

Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Edinson Volquez was dazzling on the mound and Adam Dunn socked a pair of home runs, as the Cincinnati Reds downed the Milwaukee Brewers, 8-2, in the middle installment of a three-game set at Miller Park.

Volquez (12-3), the Reds' lone National League All-Star representative, gave up two runs -- one earned -- on six hits and struck out 10 over seven solid innings, lowering his earned run average to an NL-best 2.29. Volquez's win moved him into sole possession of second place, one behind Arizona's Brandon Webb for the National League lead.

Dunn finished with four RBI and Jerry Hairston Jr. was 4-for-4 with two doubles, a walk and three runs scored for Cincinnati, which has won seven of its last nine outings. Edwin Encarnacion added a solo homer, while Jay Bruce drove in a pair of runs.

"It's nice to get a lead early with Volquez on the mound," said Dunn. "We were pretty confident."

Seth McClung (5-5) was saddled with the loss despite giving up just three first-inning runs for Milwaukee. McClung went 6 1/3 frames and allowed only one hit beyond the troublesome first. He also recorded a season-high seven punch outs and walked three. Eric Gagne was charged with four runs in the ninth.

Prince Fielder went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and a walk for the Brewers, who have dropped three of their last four games.

The Reds raced out to a 3-0 lead in the opening frame on Dunn's 25th home run of the season. Hairston singled to begin the game and Ken Griffey Jr. drew a one-out walk. After Brandon Phillips went down swinging, Dunn slugged the first pitch he saw from McClung -- a hanging curve -- over the right-field wall.

"It was a curveball," said McClung of his offering to Dunn. "He was just sitting on it. I thought he would be expecting a fastball and I was just trying to get ahead."

Fielder's 18th home run of the year made it a one-run game in the fourth. Hairston misplayed a grounder off the bat of Ryan Braun to start the inning and Fielder followed with a line-drive smash that cleared the wall in left.

The Brewers had the bases loaded in the fifth and could not score.

Cincinnati tacked on an insurance run in the top of the eighth when Hairston stroked a one-out double and later scored on an RBI single by Griffey.

The Reds busted the game open in the ninth. Dunn and Encarnacion clubbed back- to-back homers to lead-off the frame. Gagne then retired the next two batters, but surrendered a single to Corey Patterson and a ground-rule double to Hairston before he was relieved by Guillermo Mota, who promptly served up a two-run single to Bruce for an 8-2 lead.
