Final Score: Milwaukee 9 - San Francisco 1
San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - CC Sabathia pitched his second consecutive dominating complete game effort, as the Milwaukee Brewers downed the San Francisco Giants, 9-1, in the opener of a three-game set at AT&T Park.
Sabathia (9-8) allowed only the one run on four hits without walking a batter. He fanned 10, doubled and scored a run. This after he went the distance in the Brewers last game before the break helping his cause at the plate with a home run.
"I'm doing what I need to do to help the team win," Sabathia said. It's a lot of fun to be in the race, to be right there and have a chance to win a championship. That's what you play for and I definitely got blessed to be able to come here and be in that situation. The season is long and I've got alot more starts left. I just try to keep going out, work hard and keep trying to help the team win as much as possible."
Prince Fielder and Mike Cameron both hit three-run homers while J.J. Hardy drove in two runs for Milwaukee, which owns a modest two-game winning streak.
Matt Cain (5-8) took the loss, allowing four runs -- three earned -- on seven hits and five walks in six plus innings. The right-hander struck out five for San Francisco, which has lost seven of its last eight overall.
Aaron Rowand hit a solo home run in the eighth, one of only four hits for the Giants.
"They acquired a great pitcher and he showed why tonight," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He had all his pitches going. He shut us down. They say great pitching will shut down hitting and it does. There is no doubt in my mind that it starts on the mound."
Sabathia doubled to center field with one out in the third, moved to third on an error, and scored on a Hardy groundout.
The Brewers added a run in the fourth. Russell Branyan doubled leading off and scored on a two-out RBI single back through the middle from Rickie Weeks.
Milwaukee extended its lead in the seventh. Weeks drew a leadoff walk and scored when Hardy cracked a double off the left field wall, ending Cain's time on the hill. Keiichi Yabu came on and plunked Ryan Braun before Jack Taschner entered and promptly allowed a three-run homer over the wall in left-center to Fielder.
Rowand cracked the dominant Sabathia in the eighth with a leadoff homer to left-center.
Milwaukee tagged Sergio Romo for three runs in the ninth. Corey Hart doubled with two out, Branyan reached on an error and Cameron drilled a three-run homer to left-center.
