Final Score: Pittsburgh 3 - Colorado 11
Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Jeff Baker hit a two-run homer and Matt Holliday added a solo shot, as the Colorado Rockies crushed the Pittsburgh Pirates, 11-3, to sweep the four-game set.
Ian Stewart had two doubles and finished with three RBI for the Rockies, who have won four straight after dropping the previous four.
"This is just what we need to get going," Stewart said. "The pitching's been going really well since the break, the hitting, too, and we just want to keep it up and get it going."
Aaron Cook (12-6) was convincing on the mound in a winning effort, going seven strong and giving up three runs on five hits.
Nate McLouth and Adam LaRoche had an RBI each for the Pirates, who have dropped five straight and seven of nine overall. Zach Duke (4-7) took the loss as he was roughed up for nine runs on 10 hits over five frames.
"This isn't like us," LaRoche said. "Scoring runs, getting hits with men on base really hasn't been a problem for us. Certainly not for four straight games."
Colorado took the lead in the fifth. Clint Barmes led off with a triple and scored as Stewart followed with a double. Cook moved the runner over to third with a sac bunt and Willy Taveras grounded out, however, Baker cleared the bases with a home run to right. Holliday then made it 6-3 as the Rockies went back-to-back with a solo shot.
The Rox added insurance runs in the sixth. It was first and third as Brad Hawpe doubled and Barmes singled, and Stewart slapped a two-run double to right before Denny Bautista was called on in relief.
Cook moved the runner over to third with a sac bunt and Taveras brought Stewart home with a sac fly to make it 9-3.
Colorado made it 11-3 in the eighth. Damaso Marte was on the hill for the Pirates to start the frame and surrendered a leadoff double to pinch-hitter Joe Koshansky. Taveras lined out, Baker worked a walk and Holliday went down swinging before Garrett Atkins clubbed a two-run double to left.
Pittsburgh jumped on top in the first inning. It was first and second with no outs after Luis Rivas singled and Doug Mientkiewicz walked. McLouth put runners on the corners with an RBI single, though Jason Bay grounded into a run-scoring double play. Xavier Nady kept it going with a double to center and LaRoche singled on a line drive to left which scored Nady and put the Pirates on top 3-0.
"I was rushing, getting balls up in the zone and overthrowing," Cook said. "I knew if I kept doing that, it would be a real short outing for me. So I made some good adjustments, got the ball down in the zone, got into a good rhythm with (catcher Chris Iannetta) and it worked out good."
The Rockies got a couple runs back in the fourth. Baker clubbed a one-out single and scored as Holliday followed with a double. Atkins popped up for the second out, but Iannetta roped an RBI double to make it a 3-2 ballgame.
