Final Score: Detroit 7 - Kansas City 1
Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Placido Polanco hit a solo home run and ended with two runs driven in, while Kenny Rogers was solid in six innings to lead the Detroit Tigers past the Kansas City Royals, 7-1, in a game that endured a rain delay of more than two hours.
Rogers (8-6) was touched for just one run on four hits, walked one and struck out four to pick up the win.
Magglio Ordonez had three hits and two RBI for the Tigers, who have won three in a row and five of seven. Matt Joyce, Miguel Cabrera and Gary Sheffield chipped in an RBI apiece in the win.
Kyle Davies (3-2) took the loss as he gave up two runs on five hits in four innings of work.
"These guys (the Tigers) are a good hitting team," Davies said. "They're going to foul off some of the good pitches over the plate. I didn't make a whole lot of good pitches."
Mark Grudzielanek went 3-for-4 and had the only RBI for the Royals, who have let four of their last six games slip away. Esteban German had two hits in defeat.
The Tigers got on the board in the first inning. Carlos Guillen belted a two- out double to right and came around as Ordonez followed with a single.
KC got the run back in the home first, though. Mike Aviles cracked a double and crossed home when Grudzielanek followed with a base hit.
"I was really good except for Mark," Rogers said. "Man, I tried all my different pitches. I don't think I threw a bad pitch."
With two outs in the third frame, Polanco belted a home run to left to put the Tigers on top 2-1.
Joel Peralta came in to pitch for the Royals in the fifth and was roughed up. Curtis Granderson led off with a single, Polanco doubled and Guillen walked to load the bases. Ordonez popped up for the first out but Cabrera stroked an RBI single. Joyce then walked, forcing in a run, before Sheffield offered a sac fly to make it 5-1.
Detroit tacked on two more insurance runs in the ninth off Robinson Tejeda. Edgar Renteria led off the frame with a single and Granderson then reached as Ross Gload botched the throw. Polanco grounded into a run-scoring force out and Guillen went down swinging. Tejeda uncorked a wild pitch, moving Polanco to second and Ordonez brought him home with a single to make it 7-1.
