American League Game Summary - Chicago at Detroit

Final Score: Chicago WSox 7 - Detroit 6

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Carlos Quentin hit a two-run home run to help the Chicago White Sox take a 7-6 win over the Detroit Tigers in the second of a three-game set at Comerica Park.

Jermaine Dye went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, two RBI and two runs scored while A.J. Pierzynski had a pair of hits, two runs scored and an RBI for the White Sox, who have won four straight. John Danks (8-4) won his fifth straight decision as he gave up five runs -- four earned -- on seven hits with five strikeouts in six innings of work.

Magglio Ordonez went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, two runs scored and two RBI and Gary Sheffield hit a solo home run for the Tigers, who have dropped their last two on the heels of a four-game winning streak. Justin Verlander (8-10) lost his first game since June 6 as he gave up seven runs on nine hits in four-plus innings of work.

"I could see from the first inning that he was all pumped up and I didn't like it," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland. "He was way out of sync. He was rushing and over-throwing. He just wasn't himself tonight."

Sheffield got the Tigers on the board in the second inning when he belted an 0-2 pitch into the left field stands for a 1-0 lead.

Chicago, though, answered in the third to take the lead. Orlando Cabrera led off the frame with a double and came home when Pierzynski followed with a single to center. Quentin then knocked a 1-0 pitch into the left field stands and Dye followed with a blast into over the left-center wall for a 4-1 advantage.

Detroit, however, came back in the fourth to tie the game. With runners on second and third, Ordonez hit a sharp grounder to second that Alexei Ramirez made a nice play on, but he tried to throw it to first off-balance and the ball got past Nick Swisher, allowing Placido Polanco and Carlos Guillen to cross the plate. After Miguel Cabrera singled to put runners at the corners, Sheffield hit into a double play to bring home Ordonez.

The White Sox again answered in the fifth to regain the lead. Pierzynski led off with a single and Quentin followed with a walk before Dye punched an RBI single to right.

Bobby Seay then took over on the mound and promptly gave up an RBI double to Jim Thome and Swisher followed with a sacrifice fly that brought home Dye for a 7-4 lead.

Ordonez hit a one-out, solo home run deep into the left field seats in the sixth inning to make it a 7-5 contest.

Detroit made it a one-run game in the seventh as Edgar Renteria scored on a wild pitch from Octavio Dotel.

"When you play the Tigers, you never know. They're so good offensively," said White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen on whether or not he was worried Chicago's lead could hold up. "It's not over until its over. These guys, or so it seems, when they step to the plate, they're in scoring position."

Ordonez led off the eighth with a double to center, but he was stranded there as the next three Detroit batters recorded outs.

Bobby Jenks gave up a two-out double to Curtis Granderson in the ninth, but got Polanco to strike out swinging and pick up his 21st save of the season.
