Final Score: Atlanta 10 - Philadelphia 12
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Shane Victorino belted a three-run homer and finished with four RBI, two hits and two runs scored to lead the Philadelphia Phillies over the Atlanta Braves, 12-10, in the rubber match of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park.
Chris Coste, Pat Burrell, Jayson Werth and Jimmy Rollins also homered for the Phillies, who set a season-high with the five home runs in the game. Rollins also scored three runs as the Phillies won two straight games for the first time since the All-Star break.
Kelly Johnson and Omar Infante homered for the Braves, who have struggled against their NL East-rival, losing 10 of the 12 matchups this season to the Phils.
The Phils trailed 5-0, but then tallied 12 straights runs for their second dramatic comeback victory versus the Braves in as many days. On Saturday, Charlie Manuel's crew ended the game with seven unanswered runs to pick up a 10-9 win.
Clay Condrey (3-2) earned the win in this one as he allowed one hit and one walk, while striking out one in two scoreless innings.
Julian Tavarez (0-3) suffered the loss after giving up one run on one hit in two-thirds of an inning.
The comeback happened in the bottom of the fourth as the Phils collected five runs to tie the contest on only three hits as they sent eight hitters to the plate. Werth started the rally with a one-out walk and crossed the plate two batters later on a two-run homer with two outs by Coste. The Phils were not done as So Taguchi hit a pinch-hit single, Rollins drew a walk and Victorino drove them both in with a three-run homer to left.
The Phils continued their scoring parade with a run in the fifth to take a 6-5 edge. Burrell hit his 26th of the season on a 3-2 pitch with one out and the bases empty.
Then in the sixth, Philadelphia exploded for five more runs to take a commanding 11-5 lead. Carlos Ruiz led off with a double down the left-field line and moved to third when Rollins followed with a base hit. Ruiz came around as Victorino singled and then with one out, Ryan Howard drove in Rollins and Victorino with a two-run single. Two batters later, Werth hit a two-run home run which also scored Howard.
Rollins hit a solo homer with two outs in the seventh to make it a 12-5 contest.
However, the Braves did not go quietly as they almost produced a comeback of their own with a five-run eighth. Mark Kotsay led off with a single and advanced to second on a one-out walk to Johnson. Infante doubled in Kotsay and after Greg Norton reached on a fielding error by Rudy Seanez to load the bases, Ryan Madson walked Gregor Blanco to force in Johnson. With two outs, Martin Prado cleared the bases with a double to trim the deficit to 12-10, but Corky Miller then grounded out to end the rally.
Brad Lidge walked one in the ninth, but settled down to earn his 24th save of the season in the scoreless frame which featured one strikeout.
The Braves jumped on the scoreboard right away with two runs in the first. Yunel Escobar smacked a one-out single to left, moved to second when Mark Teixeira followed with a walk and came around on a single by Brian McCann. Teixeira crossed the plate one batter later on a double by Kotsay.
With a rain delay of one hour and 57 minutes during the second inning, both pitchers left early with no-decisions. In his first Philadelphia start at home since being acquired from the Athletics, Joe Blanton surrendered two runs on three hits and one walk, while striking out one in two innings.
Jorge Campillo allowed two hits in his 1 2/3 scoreless frames for the Braves.
In the top of the fourth, the Braves posted three runs to push their advantage to 5-0. Kotsay led off with a single and two batters later came around on a two-run homer to right by Johnson. Infante then went deep to left for back-to- back home runs off of Adam Eaton.
