Final Score: Minnesota 4 - Cleveland 2
Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Justin Morneau knocked in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning with a double to lift the Minnesota Twins over the Cleveland Indians, 4-2, in the rubber match of a three-game set at Progressive Field.
Craig Monroe scored a run on two hits for the Twins, who won their second straight contest on the heels of a five-game slide.
Grady Sizemore collected a team-high two hits for the Indians, who have dropped four of their last five outings.
The game was knotted at two, but the Twins posted two runs on three hits in the ninth for the victory. Alexi Casilla got it going with a one-out double down the left-field line. Casilla crossed the plate two batters later as Morneau smacked a double to left with two outs. Morneau would come around two batters later as an insurance run via a base hit up the middle by Jason Kubel.
Joe Nathan tossed a perfect bottom of the ninth to record his 28th save of the season to preserve the win for Minnesota.
Matt Guerrier (6-4) earned the win after striking out one in a perfect inning for the Twins.
Rafael Perez (1-2) suffered the defeat and was tagged for two runs on three hits and one walk in his only inning.
The Indians opened up the scoring in the second as they took advantage of a lead-off single by Shin-Soo Choo. Choo moved to third on another base hit by Andy Marte and then with one out, Sal Fasano brought Choo home via a sacrifice fly to right.
The Twins did not have a baserunner throughout the first five innings off of Jeremy Sowers, but they got on the board with two runs in the sixth off of two soft hits and they never trailed again. Monroe hit a bloop double into shallow right field to start the frame, Brendan Harris followed with a walk and then Nick Punto reached on a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. Monroe touched the plate as Denard Span hit into a fielder's choice and Harris came home one batter later on a groundout hit by Casilla.
Cleveland tied the game at two in the eighth thanks to a sacrifice fly by David Dellucci. Asdrubal Cabrera scored on the fly ball to deep center after he led off with a single and raced to third on another base hit by Sizemore.
The two starting pitchers threw well, but each walked away with no-decisions. Sowers, who was coming off his first win of the season, only surrendered two runs on three hits and one walk in eight innings of work. The southpaw also collected five strikeouts
Nick Blackburn, who is now winless in five of his last six starts for the Twins, only yielded one run in seven innings of play. The righty also gave up four hits and one walk, while striking out three.
