National League Game Summary - Arizona at San Diego

Final Score: Arizona 5 - San Diego 8

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Greg Maddux got his first win since May 10 and the San Diego Padres downed the Arizona Diamondbacks, 8-5, in the opener of a three-game set at Petco Park.

Maddux (4-8) got career win No. 350 on May 10, but was 0-5 in his previous 14 trips to the mound before this game. It was the longest winless drought of his caree. He went five-plus innings and was charged with nine hits and four runs along with four strikeouts. Also, he moved past Phil Niekro into 10th place on the all-time strikeout list with 3,344.

Nick Hundley hit a three-run home run while Khalil Greene added a two-run shot for the Padres, who have won their last four games.

Chris Young smacked a two-run home run while Stephen Drew and Conor Jackson each drove in a run for the Diamondbacks, who had a three-game winning streak stopped.

Micah Owings (6-9) again struggled on the mound as he was shelled for eight runs on six hits with a pair of walks in just three innings of work. Owings is now 0-7 over his last 12 starts after starting the season 6-2 in his first 10 outings.

"He hung some sliders and didn't have good command when he was throwing the ball with any of his pitches," said Arizona manager Bob Melvin about Owings.

The Padres jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning as Jody Gerut worked a two-out walk and came home when Greene followed with a shot over the left field fence.

Arizona grabbed the lead in the third. Miguel Montero led off with single and later went to third on a single from Owings. Drew brought home Montero with a sacrifice fly to left and Young followed with a blast over the center field wall for a 3-2 advantage.

However, San Diego got to Owings for six runs, all with two outs in the bottom of the third to regain the lead. Brian Giles kept the inning alive with a walk and moved to third on Adrian Gonzalez's double. Kevin Kouzmanoff brought home both runners with a single to left and Gerut followed with a double to right to score Kouzmanoff. After Greene was hit by a pitch, Hundley blasted the ball into the left field stands for an 8-3 lead.

"I was trying to get something up in the zone that I could put in play and fortunately I got a good pitch to hit and put a good swing on it," said Hundley.

The Diamondbacks got a run back in the sixth. Chad Tracy led off with a single and moved to second when Maddux was called for a balk. After Mark Reynolds singled to put men on the corners, Maddux was lifted for Wilfredo Ledezma.

With Montero at the plate, Ledezma uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Tracy to score and make it an 8-4 contest.

Mike Adams pitched a scoreless seventh inning for San Diego and Heath Bell pitched the eighth, but he got into trouble.

Tracy lined out to start the frame, but Reynolds worked a walk and, after Montero struck out, Alex Romero got on base when Edgar Gonzalez misplayed a grounder. Augie Ojeda then drew a free pass to load the bases, but Bell got Drew to ground out to first to end the inning.

Bryan Corey started the ninth to close out the game, but he gave up a leadoff double to Young and, after Orlando Hudson flied out, Jackson punched a double to score Young.

Trevor Hoffman, though, came out of the pen and got Tracy to strike out and Reynolds to pop out and end the game and pick up his 22nd save of the season.
