American League Game Summary - Detroit at Cleveland

Final Score: Detroit 0 - Cleveland 5

Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Paul Byrd and Edward Mujica combined for a four-hit shutout as the Cleveland Indians downed the Detroit Tigers, 5-0, in the opener of a four-game set.

Byrd (5-10) won consecutive starts for the first time this season as he gave up just four hits and three walks while fanning four in 7 2/3 innings for the Indians, who had dropped four of five coming into the game.

"I made some good pitches early and it got my confidence going," said Byrd. "I'm getting my changeup back which helps me against lefthanders and I was throwing my slider good. We got another win and that's good."

Jhonny Peralta drove in a pair of runs while Asdrubal Cabrera hit a two-run homer.

Kenny Rogers (8-7) was saddled with the loss as he gave up five runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings for the Tigers, who have dropped three of four. Curtis Granderson had a pair of hits in the loss.

The Indians plated a run in the first inning. Grady Sizemore led off with a blast off the top of the fence in center field for a stand-up double. He moved to third when Franklin Gutierrez grounded out, and after Ben Francisco was hit with a pitch, crossed home as Peralta beat out a potential double play grounder.

Cleveland worked another run in the third. Gutierrez punched a one-out single to left. After Francisco flied out, Gutierrez came home as Peralta roped a double to right field.

The Indians padded their lead in the sixth. Kelly Shoppach got the scoring started with a lead-off home run that just cleared the wall in left. Ryan Garko later got on base with a double to left, and with two outs, Cabrera blasted a shot into the seats in left for a 5-0 lead.

Byrd, meanwhile, stymied the Tigers offense over his start. He gave up a leadoff double to Granderson in the sixth, but stranded the runner there as he got the next three batters while holding Granderson at second.

Byrd was pulled from the mound with two outs in the eighth and runners on first and second. Mujica, though, held the shutout as he got Magglio Ordonez to ground into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

Mujica then retired the side in order in the ninth.
