American League Game Summary - Detroit at Cleveland

Final Score: Detroit 14 - Cleveland 12

Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Placido Polanco drove in the go-ahead run, and the Detroit Tigers overcame a seven-run deficit and a record-setting night by Kelly Shoppach for a 14-12 victory in 13 innings over the Cleveland Indians in a game that featured 41 hits, six errors and 14 pitchers.

Before the game, the Tigers traded catcher Ivan Rodriguez to the New York Yankees for reliever Kyle Farnsworth, who last played for the Tigers three years ago.

Shoppach homered twice and doubled three times as he matched a Hall of Famer and former Indian Lou Boudreau as the only American Leaguer, among other National Leaguers, with five extra-base hits in a single game.

After back-to-back one-out singles by Carlos Guillen and Curtis Granderson in the 13th, Polanco had an RBI groundout to score Guillen. Granderson came home on a Matt Joyce single.

Andy Gonzalez walked to lead off the home 13th, but Casey Fossum got three consecutive outs.

Fossum (2-0) worked the last two innings, allowing just one hit for Detroit to pick up the win. The Tigers have won two in a row and seven of their last 10 games.

Granderson was 5-for-7 with three runs scored while Miguel Cabrera was 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBI to highlight Detroit's 22-hit attack. Gary Sheffield tacked on four hits as well in the third game of this four-contest series.

Juan Rincon (2-3) suffered the loss after allowing two runs -- one earned -- on four hits over the final two innings.

Ben Francisco also homered twice for the Indians as they lost for the sixth time in eight games.

"It was a crazy long night, we had our opportunities, we just weren't able to come through," Indians manager Eric Wedge said.

Cliff Lee, who had an 8-1 lead at one point, gave up 10 hits for six runs while striking out five in five innings.

Nate Robertson lasted just three innings allowing eight runs on nine hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

After a pair of walks and a Granderson single loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, Polanco hit a sacrifice fly to deep center to score Brandon Inge for Detroit's first lead.

Shoppach took a low and inside Fernando Rodney fastball deep over the wall in left to tie the game at 12 in the home ninth. David Dellucci grounded out to first with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Cleveland's leadoff hitter got a hit in each of the first three extra innings, but the Indians were unable to capitalize. None of those opportunities were bigger than the 12th when Shoppach struck out with the bases loaded before Andy Marte grounded into a 6-4-3 double play.

Francisco snapped an 0-for-18 slump with a two-out blast in the first.

The Indians broke it open in the second on Grady Sizemore's 26th homer with two outs. Marte singled to score Shoppach with one out before Sizemore's three-run blast.

Edgar Renteria scored on a Granderson base-hit in the third to make it 5-1.

The Indians, however, wasted little time extending their lead with a three-run bottom of the frame. Shoppach and Marte each hit one-out run-scoring doubles before Asdrubal Cabrera doubled Marte home with two outs.

Miguel Cabrera hit his 19th homer in the fourth and Inge followed suit with his ninth one inning later to make it 8-3.

Detroit kept the hits coming in the fifth on a Polanco RBI single, one of four consecutive hits to begin the inning. Miguel Cabrera then hit a sacrifice fly to score Granderson and Sheffield followed with a shot down the third base line to score Polanco, but was thrown out trying to extend the hit to a double.

The Tigers continued to claw back with another run in the sixth, their fourth consecutive inning with a run. Granderson hit a chopper back to the mound that Rafael Perez deflected toward short, allowing Inge to score.

Francisco struck again in the home fifth with his 10th homer. Shoppach's round-tripper greeted Todd Jones two batters later and scored Shin-Soo Choo for an 11-7 lead.

Detroit finally completed the comeback with a four-run, two-out rally in the eighth. Granderson walked and Polanco reached on a bunt single before Marcus Thames' RBI double scored Granderson. Magglio Ordonez followed with a single to score Polanco and put men on the corners. Miguel Cabrera completed the rally with a two-run double to tie the game at 11.
