Final Score: Tampa Bay 3 - Toronto 2
Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Carlos Pena homered and Carl Crawford tripled in a run to lead the Tampa Bay Rays to a 3-2 win over the Blue Jays in the rubber match of their three-game set in Toronto.
Edwin Jackson (7-7) won his second consecutive start, going five innings and allowing only two runs and seven hits, fanning three and walking two. It was the righty's third win in July, giving him three wins in a month for the first time in his career.
"Today was definitely a battle. It was a performance on guts," Jackson said. "(I) had men in scoring position with no outs twice, and for any of them not to come in was definitely hard. (It was) a combination of making a couple pitches when I needed to and our defense."
Troy Percival pitched a perfect ninth for his 23rd save of the season.
Crawford finished the day batting 2-for-4 while Dioner Navarro and Akinori Iwamura added two hits apiece to give the Rays their fourth win in six games.
Scott Richmond (0-1) threw 5 1/3 solid innings in his major league debut despite receiving the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking none. The 14th Canadian ever to pitch for the Blue Jays, Richmond had to give up his spot on his country's Olympic team for a chance to play in the big leagues.
"I was very impressed with the first inning of Richmond. (I was) very impressed with the performance he gave us today," said Jays catcher Gregg Zaun. "(He has) lots of different weapons. He did a great job against a really tough lineup. They've got a great combo of speed and power, (and) he kept them off balance all day."
Joe Inglett batted 3-for-5 and Lyle Overbay added a two-run homer for the Jays, who have lost three of four.
Tampa Bay got off to a quick start. Iwamura led off with a single and two batters later Crawford tripled to give the Rays a 1-0 lead in the first.
Toronto took the lead in the home half, though, as Overbay blasted his seventh homer of the season to center to give the Blue Jays a one-run edge.
Pena quickly tied up the score in the fourth, hitting the first pitch he saw over the center field fence for his 18th home run of the season.
The Rays added some more offense in the inning, as Eric Hinske followed the Pena blast with a double. Navarro singled to put runners on the corners with nobody out, and Tampa Bay went up 3-2 on Gabe Gross' double play groundout.
The Blue Jays squandered an opportunity to tie the game up in their half of the fourth after Adam Lind led off with a triple. Brad Wilkerson popped out, Zaun grounded out and John McDonald flied out to strand Lind at third.
Toronto threatened again in the fifth, getting the first two batters on base with a single and an error by Iwamura. After a wild pitch, the Blue Jays once again had runners in scoring position with nobody out but could not cash in. Jackson got Alex Rios to ground out and Overbay swinging. After walking Matt Stairs to load the bases, he got the red-hot Lind to fly out to center.
