American League Game Summary - Detroit at Cleveland

Final Score: Detroit 4 - Cleveland 9

Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Grady Sizemore homered and drove in four runs, as the Cleveland Indians overcame several miscues in the field to earn a 9-4 win and a four-game series split against the Detroit Tigers.

Sal Fasano was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI for Cleveland, which had lost six of its previous eight affairs. Fausto Carmona (5-3), making his second start after a two-month stint on the disabled list, allowed four runs -- two earned -- on five hits in his first win since May 12.

"We didn't play well defensively and [Carmona] didn't let that get to him," Indians manager Eric Wedge said. "He kept with his rhythm, kept with his tempo and stayed over the rubber and pitched."

Detroit's Justin Verlander (8-11) lost his second straight start on the heels of winning four in a row. The right-hander started strong but was touched for six runs on five hits and three walks, while fanning nine in 5 2/3 innings of work for the Tigers, who had won three of four.

Curtis Granderson was 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Carlos Guillen and Dane Sardinha knocked in a run apiece for Detroit.

Verlander cruised through four frames, retiring seven straight hitters before hitting Fasano in the shoulder in the fifth. Asdrubal Cabrera then worked a six-pitch walk, and Sizemore smoked a first-pitch fastball over the right field wall for his 27th home run of the year, breaking a 1-1 tie.

Fielding mistakes from Cabrera cost the Indians a run in the sixth. The second baseman lost a ball in the sun to put runners on the corners, and booted Matt Joyce's routine inning-ending grounder. Ramon Santiago scored on the error to make it a 4-2 game.

A two-out RBI single from Fasano ended Verlander's outing in the sixth. Cabrera then singled to right off recently promoted reliever Clay Rapada to load the bases, and Rapada grazed Sizemore with a pitch to force in a run for a 6-2 Indians lead.

More fielding gaffes from Cleveland allowed Detroit to creep back in the seventh. Right fielder Shin-Soo Choo lost a pop fly in the sun to start the inning, and Ryan Raburn singled to left to put runners on the corners. Carmona uncorked a wild pitch to bring in a run, while Raburn moved up on Fasano's fielding error and scored on a Sardinha ground out.

Rafael Perez came on in relief and got the final two outs of the inning before striking out the side in the eighth to maintain the home team's two-run lead.

The Tribe solidified the win with three insurance runs in their half of the eighth. Fasano doubled off the wall in left to score Ryan Garko, Franklin Gutierrez recorded a sac fly and Cabrera trotted home on Sardinha's throwing error.

The Tigers scored on a controversial play in the first. Curtis Granderson, who singled to start the game, moved to third on a passed ball by Fasano. The ball ricocheted off the shoulder of home plate umpire Wally Bell and skipped near the Detroit dugout. The Tigers' bat boy picked up the ball while in the field of play, and the home plate umpire awarded Granderson third base, where he scored later in the inning on a Guillen sacrifice fly.

Cleveland got the run back in the bottom half on consecutive two-out doubles from Ben Francisco and Jhonny Peralta, the latter bringing in the tying run.
