Final Score: Philadelphia 8 - Washington 4
Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Jimmy Rollins hit a two-run homer, drove in three and scored twice to back a strong showing from Kyle Kendrick, as the Philadelphia Phillies brought out the brooms in an 8-4 victory to complete a three-game sweep of Washington.
Kendrick (9-5) gave up just two runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 frames. The right-hander peppered the strike zone with four strikeouts and just one walk.
Jayson Werth also homered and Shane Victorino finished 2-for-4, extending his hitting streak to 11 games, for the Phillies, winners in five straight and now one-game ahead of the New York Mets in the National League East. The five straight victories matches a season high.
"It doesn't matter who the competition is, when you hit the ball, you hit and that's what we have been doing," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said.
John Lannan (6-11) labored through 5 2/3 innings, giving up eight runs -- six earned -- on nine hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. Jesus Flores drove home a run for the Nationals, losers in nine straight contests.
Werth put the Phillies on the scoreboard in the second frame, staying back on an offspeed pitch and lining it into the Philadelphia bullpen over the left- field wall for a 1-0 edge.
Eric Bruntlett and Carlos Ruiz each singled and Kendrick bunted the catcher into scoring position. Rollins followed with a chopper into the hole between third and short, but Zimmerman stepped in front to throw out Rollins as Bruntlett crossed the plate for a 2-0 lead.
Zimmerman couldn't make a tough play one batter later. His throw on the run was into Victorino, hitting the first baseman's glove and Victorino's helmet. The ball caromed away, allowing Ruiz to score for a 3-0 advantage.
The Nationals -- listless offensively for the better part of a week -- put single runs up in the second and third frames. Kory Casto doubled, moved to third on a groundout and scored when a Kendrick offering bounced away from Ruiz.
Flores' RBI base hit in the third cut the deficit to 3-2. Earlier in the frame, Zimmerman was hit by a pitch and stayed in the game to run, but left in the top of the fourth for precautionary purposes. An x-ray was negative and Zimmerman is listed as day-to-day.
Kendrick struck out on a pitch in the dirt to start the fourth, but beat out a wide throw from Flores to reach first. Rollins followed with a two-run shot deep over the wall in left for a 5-2 game.
Another wide throw from a third baseman lead to another Phillies tally in the sixth. Rollins sliced a double down the right-field line with two outs then Victorino hit a slow chopper to third. Ronnie Belliard barehanded the ball, but his throw pushed Casto off the bag and the ball was dropped. Rollins alertly broke for home and crossed the plate.
Chase Utley singled and Ryan Howard laced a base hit over the shift into right, allowing Victorino to race around third to score for a 7-2 lead. Pat Burrell then ripped a single to left, scoring Utley with the frame's third run.
Washington put two runs on the board in the ninth, forcing Phillies manager Charlie Manuel to bring in Chad Durbin, who recorded the final out to complete the sweep.
