Final Score: San Francisco 3 - San Diego 2
San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Eugenio Velez knocked in the deciding run as San Francisco dodged a bullet to best San Diego, 3-2, in the opener of a three-game set at Petco Park.
Fred Lewis finished with two hits and an RBI for the Giants, who won for the second time in their last six.
Sergio Romo (1-1) picked up the win by holding San Diego off the board in the ninth. Brian Wilson earned his 29th save despite a shaky final inning. Starter Tim Lincecum was stellar again despite a no-decision, scattering three hits and a run over seven innings with 11 strikeouts.
"Big win against a division team," said Lincecum. "It's big for us. Every game is now, so if we can scratch out a win, I'm happy."
Adrian Gonzalez homered and Luis Rodriguez also drove in a run for the Padres, who have dropped three in a row. Trevor Hoffman (1-6) took the loss after surrendering the winning run in the 10th. Josh Banks allowed eight hits and two runs over seven frames in the start.
Hoffman retired Rich Aurilia and Jose Castillo to start the 10th, but allowed a single to Emmanuel Burriss followed by Velez, who stroked a slicing pinch- hit double down the line in right which allowed Burriss to score.
Wilson had a rocky time in the home half. Edgar Gonzalez punched a one- out single to center, followed by a Brian Giles single to left. Adrian Gonzalez also dumped a hit which loaded the bases. However, Kevin Kouzmanoff hit a slow grounder to second which turned into a game-ending double play.
"Four good at-bats. Couldn't quite get it through the middle there," said Padres manager Bud Black. "Very good play by the shortstop."
The Giants scratched out a run in the first. Randy Winn stroked a leadoff base hit and Ivan Ochoa followed up with a single which advanced Winn to third. Although Ochoa was caught stealing second, Lewis lofted a sacrifice fly to plate the run.
San Diego answered in the second as Kouzmanoff walked with one out and scored later on a Rodriguez infield single.
Lewis helped the Giants retake the lead in the fourth by leading off with a single and scoring later in the inning on a passed ball.
Adrian Gonzalez bested Jack Taschner with a two-out solo shot to left-center in the eighth to tie the game.
