National League Game Summary - San Francisco at San Diego

Final Score: San Francisco 2 - San Diego 0

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Barry Zito was brilliant on the hill to lead the San Francisco Giants past the San Diego Padres, 2-0, in the middle contest of a three-game set.

Zito (6-13) scattered three hits over his eight frames of work, while fanning five and walking four. Brian Wilson tossed a perfect ninth to notch his 30th save. Fred Lewis was 2-for-4 and scored a run for the Giants, who have won two in a row and three of their last five. Bengie Molina and Emmanuel Burriss both knocked in a run.

"You know, to go eight innings and pitch the way [Zito] did was very impressive," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He had good stuff, had good command. Even at the end he was throwing the ball well. So great effort by Barry."

Jake Peavy (8-7) was the hard-luck loser as he yielded only a run on five hits over seven innings. Peavy also struck out seven and didn't walk a batter. Brian Giles had two of the three hits for the Padres, who have dropped four straight.

"That was the best [Zito] threw in a while," Giles said. "It's been very frustrating. This game is based on failures. You're going to fail more than you succeed. You try to keep those failures to a minimum and try to get it going."

The teams combined for four hits through the first six innings.

San Francisco broke the scoreless tie in the seventh inning. With one out, Lewis singled on a grounder to left and stole second base. Molina followed with a grounder to right field, scoring Lewis and giving the Giants a 1-0 lead.

The Giants added an insurance run in the ninth off Cla Meredith. After Aaron Rowand grounded out, Rich Aurilia singled and moved to second as Jose Castillo grounded out. Burriss kept it going with an RBI single to left.

Wilson took the hill for the Giants in the ninth and got Kevin Kouzmanoff to go down swinging. Chase Headley grounded to Aurilia for the second out and Josh Bard followed suit with a grounder to first to end the game.
