Final Score: San Diego 16 - Colorado 7
Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Brian Giles and Luke Carlin each drove in four runs and each hit one of San Diego's four homers as the Padres trumped the Colorado Rockies, 16-7, in the rubber match of a three-game set.
Giles finished with four hits, Jody Gerut was 3-for-6 with a three-run homer, and Kevin Kouzmanoff added three hits and a two-run shot for the Padres, who have won three of five. Adrian Gonzalez finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI, as every San Diego position player registered at least one of the club's 20 hits.
Justin Hampson (1-1) was credited with the win for his three scoreless innings of relief in back of starter Chris Young, who gave up seven runs on nine hits and three walks through four frames.
The Rockies added starter Livan Hernandez to the active roster before the game, but the veteran failed to get out of the third inning. Hernandez (0-1), who was 10-8 with a 5.48 earned-run average with the Minnesota Twins before being waived on August 1, was punished for nine runs on seven hits and four walks, while recording just eight outs en route to the loss.
Brad Hawpe ripped a three-run homer, while Cory Sullivan was 2-for-3 with a two-run triple for Colorado, which has dropped four of five.
"We've been playing so well at home this year, and to lose two series to a couple teams we thought we should beat is tough to take and frustrating," Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki said referring to the Padres and the Washington Nationals.
The Padres got going in the first inning with two singles followed by run- scoring doubles from Giles and Gonzalez for a quick 3-0 lead. Later in the inning Carlin singled in Gonzalez.
Walks and homers were the story in the third inning, as San Diego plated seven on just four hits. Kouzmanoff followed Gonzalez's leadoff walk with his 17th homer of the year, and a pair of free passes preceded Gerut's two-out shot several batters later, ending Hernandez's day.
Jason Grilli came on in relief and served up a single to Luis Rodriguez before Giles smacked a homer to right to give the visitors a commanding 11-0 lead.
Colorado didn't go away quietly, though, countering with its own seven-run frame in the fourth. A double, an Ian Stewart RBI single and another base hit opened the inning, and Yorvit Torrealba brought in a run on a sacrifice fly. Sullivan stepped up to the plate later in the frame with two runners on and cleared the bases with a triple.
After Matt Holliday walked, Hawpe connected on his 18th homer of the year to make it an 11-7 margin.
But Carlin responded in the sixth with the first home run of his career, scoring Chase Headley and Gonzalez, who also added his second RBI of the game with a single up the middle in the seventh.
"I feel really blessed," Carlin said of his homer. "I just put a good swing on the ball and hit it pretty good."
Brian Fuentes walked Headley with the bases loaded in the ninth to account for the Padres' 16th and final run.
