Final Score: Milwaukee 5 - San Diego 2
San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Jeff Suppan threw eight solid innings, and Prince Fielder slugged a three-run homer, as the Milwaukee Brewers beat San Diego, 5-2, in the first of three games with the Padres.
Suppan (8-7) gave up both San Diego runs on four hits and a pair of walks, while striking out three in helping Milwaukee win its seventh straight game.
Mike Cameron finished 2-for-4 with a solo homer, while Rickie Weeks added a pair of hits for the Brewers, who moved within three games of first-place Chicago in the NL Central. The Cubs' game against Atlanta on Tuesday was rained out.
Cha Seung Baek (4-7) allowed five runs -- four earned -- on seven hits in six- plus innings to absorb the loss. He also walked four and struck out three for the Padres, who had a two-game win streak snapped.
"We hit some balls early in the game, and some of their outfielders had to retreat," Padres manager Bud Black said. "But (Suppan) kept the ball in the park and pitched well."
Jody Gerut and Kevin Kouzmanoff each hit a solo homer to account for the San Diego runs.
With the score tied at a run apiece in the top of the fourth inning, J.J. Hardy got a Brewers rally started with a walk. Gabe Kapler followed with a single to bring up Fielder, who got well in front of a high pitch and ripped it -- just fair -- into the right field stands for a 4-1 Brewers lead.
"Oh, it's not a home run park," Cameron said. "I mean, let's be real about that. Prince put a good swing on it; the man's got a lot of power."
Gerut's leadoff homer in the bottom of the sixth got a run back for San Diego, but Milwaukee got the run right back in the seventh. With runners on second and third with two outs, Kapler hit a roller down the third base line.
Kouzmanoff picked up the ball, but paused momentarily as though to wonder if the ball had gone into foul territory. By the time he decided to throw to first, Suppan had scored and Kapler was safe at first, restoring Milwaukee's three-run edge.
Suppan allowed just one baserunner in the seventh, set San Diego down in order in the eighth, and Salomon Torres tossed a perfect ninth to end the game and nail down his 23rd save of the season.
Kouzmanoff's one-out solo homer in the second put the Padres on top, but Cameron hit a leadoff shot in the third to tie the game.
