Final Score: Toronto 6 - Detroit 4
Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Adam Lind hit a solo home run and Vernon Wells had a two-run double to cap a four-run seventh inning, as the Toronto Blue Jays battled back to beat the struggling Detroit Tigers, 6-4, in the second of a four-game set.
Joe Inglett and Marco Scutaro both drove in runs for the Blue Jays, who have won the first two of this series after dropping three straight to the Indians.
A.J. Burnett (15-9) won his fifth straight start after going six innings and yielding four runs on eight hits while fanning six and walking one. Scott Downs ran his scoreless innings streak to 17 2/3 with a perfect eighth. B.J. Ryan earned his 23rd save with a perfect ninth.
Gary Sheffield hit a pair of solo shots, his 36th career multi-homer game, for the Tigers, who have dropped nine of their last 12 games. Magglio Ordonez chipped in a solo blast in defeat to run his hitting streak to 11 games. Carlos Guillen went 0-for-4 before exiting before the top of the eighth with left lower back tightness.
Zach Miner lasted six innings and gave up one run on five hits while matching a career-high with five strikeouts. Joel Zumaya (0-2) was saddled with the loss after giving up two runs in the seventh without registering an out.
"It's not a very proud (bullpen) staff. That's the way it is," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "We had a chance to shut the game down and just didn't get it done. It's a shame, Sheffield had a big night."
Toronto started its rally in the seventh off Bobby Seay. Lind singled, and after Lyle Overbay was caught looking, John McDonald clubbed a double to left. Inglett then grounded out, which scored Lind, moved McDonald to third, and chased Seay in favor of Zumaya.
Scutaro welcomed Zumaya to the game with an RBI single and Alex Rios walked. Wells put the Jays on top with a two-run double before Matt Stairs and Rod Barajas walked. Kyle Farnsworth was then summoned from the 'pen and got Lind to fly out to end the threat, but the damage had been done, as the Jays led 5-4.
"The offense really picked me up tonight," Burnett said. "I made a couple of mistakes, but I was able to make the rest of my pitches."
Toronto tacked on another run in the ninth as Rios was safe on an error and went to second on the play. Wells then flied out, but Stairs was intentionally walked. Rios then stole third and Stairs advanced to second, before a wild pitch sent both runners moving. Rios was out at home but pinch-runner Kevin Mench was safe at third. Barajas walked before a Lind single scored Mench.
Lind put the Blue Jays on the board, 1-0, in the second with a two-out blast deep into the right-center field seats.
Sheffield tied the game with a two-out homer of his own in the home half.
Detroit jumped on top in the sixth as Ordonez led off with a homer to right. It was originally called a single as it appeared that the ball hit off the top of the fence, but was later ruled a home run after the umpires decided that the ball bounced off part of the wall beyond the fence.
Sheffield followed two batters later with a homer to left and Edgar Renteria kept it going with a double to the gap in right. Brandon Inge then laced an RBI double down the line in left but was thrown out trying to steal third, and it was 4-1.
