Final Score: San Francisco 5 - Atlanta 11
Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Jeff Francoeur woke up from a year-long slump to go 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI to highlight the Atlanta Braves' 11-5 thrashing of the San Francisco Giants in the second test of a four-game set.
Greg Norton crushed a two-run homer while Omar Infante had two hits, two runs scored and two RBI to help the Braves snap a five-game skid
Mike Hampton (2-1), who beat San Francisco for his first win in nearly three years earlier in the month, threw six innings while giving up two runs on seven hits and a pair walks in yet another victory.
"We haven't had one of these kind of wins in a long time," Francoeur said. "We've been struggling to get wins and [Hampton] pitched a great game. We gave him some runs to get him some confidence and he took it from there."
The Giants' Matt Palmer (0-1) made an inauspicious ML debut as he was tagged for six runs on seven hits and four walks in a mere 2 1/3 innings. The 29- year-old right-hander was recalled on Thursday to pitch out of the bullpen but needed to make a spot start as scheduled hurler Jonathan Sanchez was scratched with a left shoulder strain and placed on the 15-day disabled list.
"It was a pleasure being here but the point is I want to throw better," Palmer said. "[The] strike zone was a little small for me. I'm a rookie, that's just the way it is."
Pablo Sandoval recorded his first ML hit during a 3-for-5 effort at the plate, and Ivan Ochoa had two doubles and an RBI for San Fran, which has dropped five of its last six games.
After being blanked in its first at-bat, Atlanta scored in each of the next five frames.
In the second, Francoeur doubled to the left field gap to plate Kelly Johnson from first and came around on Gregor Blanco's two-out base hit up the middle.
An inning later, Infante's double to the right field gap scored Chipper Jones before Brian McCann was tagged out in a rundown between third and home. That was the last out Palmer recorded, as a walk to Norton was followed by three consecutive run-scoring singles by Johnson, Francoeur and Hampton.
After a one-out single by Infante, Norton provided two more runs in the fourth by hammering a no-doubter about a dozen rows up the left field seats for an 8-0 Braves lead.
The Giants got their first runs in the fifth thanks to an RBI double by Ochoa and Aaron Rowand's RBI groundout, but Atlanta kept pouring it on.
With runners on the corners, Infante knocked in a run with a fielder's choice ground out in the bottom half, and two more RBI in the sixth -- a double by Ruben Gotay and ground out by Jones -- made the game a laugher.
Emmanuel Burriss singled in Dave Roberts in the eighth, and the Giants got two more runs off reliever Vladimir Nunez in the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Roberts and Omar Vizquel's pinch-hit single with the bases loaded.
