Georgia rewards Perno with new deal

Wed 2nd, July 2008

Athens, GA (Sports Network) - Georgia has rewarded baseball coach David Perno with a new five-year contract after he led the Bulldogs to the College World Series finals.

Perno's new deal features a raise of $150,000 per year and will pay him a total of $2.25 million through the 2013 campaign. The new agreement also replaces the old contract that ran through 2011.

"I'm excited we have reached an agreement with David to ensure he will continue to build upon the tremendous success our baseball program has enjoyed under his guidance," said athletic director Damon Evans. "David has done an outstanding job, not only with producing winning teams, but also creating great enthusiasm surrounding Georgia baseball. I'm looking forward to the future and the continued excellence of his teams."

Georgia has reached the College World Series three times in the past five seasons under Perno, an Athens native who played for the Bulldogs when they won the CWS in 1990. He was also an assistant coach for the 2001 SEC Championship squad and succeeded Ron Polk as head coach on July 21, 2001.

"First of all, I'd like to say that I really enjoyed my discussions with Damon after the College World Series, and we're excited about the future of the Bulldog baseball program," Perno stated. "I'm very pleased with the opportunity to be at Georgia and hope to be here a long time. The support we've received from our administration is very much appreciated."

Perno's teams reached the College World Series in 2004, 2006 and this spring. The Bulldogs lost to Fresno State in the best-of-three championship series in June.
