New Orleans Hornets' point guard, Chris Paul, will be sidelined for 4 to 6 weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his knee. The surgery was done by Dr. James Andrews on Thursday in Pensacola, Florida.
Paul's meniscus in his left knee was torn after colliding into a camera as he was trying to save a pass that was overthrown by forward David West during their overtime loss last week vs. the Chicago Bulls in New Orleans Arena. After the game, Paul revealed he twisted his knee before when they played Golden State on January 27th game and that he hit the same spot when he crashed into the camera.
He will be on crutches for the next 2 to 3 weeks and will begin therapy immediately. Paul will miss the All-Star Game at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas on February 14th. The league selected Chauncey Billups of Denver to replace him as a reserve for the Western Conference team.
"Perceptibly, for me it's a tough thing," Paul said in a statement on Thursday. "I've been lucky through my career as a basketball player to have not suffered a lot of injuries. The main thing for me is to come back healthy and help the team anyway I can. Everything happens for a reason; I know I will come back stronger. I have confidence in Darren Collison to step up during my absence."
As Paul has been out, the Hornets have lost 2 of 3 games and were required to come back from a 21 point deficit to defeat the Memphis Grizzlies last week at the FedEx Forum.
Paul was selected Western Conference Player of the Month for January. Averging 20.8 points, 2.4 steals, and 11.9 assists leading the Hornets to a 12-5 record. Overall it was the most wins by a Western Conference team. Though, Paul said that the honor was bittersweet due to his injury.
Earlier this season, Paul sat out 8 games with a sprained left ankle. Before Thursday, the last time Paul had surgery was at the end of the 2006-07 season to repair a stress fraction in his left foot.
At first, when Paul was injured last week, he was diagnosed with a bruised left knee. However, a MRI test showed on Sunday that he had the meniscus tear.
Jeff Bower, the Hornets Coach said, "We have all the reason to be buoyant. He will attack his rehab with the same energy he plays the game with and he will be back."
