Knicks grab McGrady in a 3 team deal, clear cap room

Tracy McGrady was traded to the Knicks in a 3 way blockbuster deal with the Kings and Rockets. The move saved the Knicks $9.4 million in salary cap room with rookie lottery pick Jordan Hill and Jared Jeffries being shipped out too.

Jeffries will save the Knicks $6.9 million in cap room and Hill is an extra $2.5 million. That is enough to get 2 max salary free agents this offseason, to give the possibility of LeBron James and a prime time partner, perhaps Chris Bosh or Dwyane Wade.

"The trade improves our chances to attain our long term goals, also keeping us competitive for the remainder of the season," Donnie Walsh of the Knicks said. Walsh's goal all season long was to make more cap space for New York to be more attractive for Lebron James.

Coach Mike D'Antoni said, "I believe that is probably what the whole thing for the last 2 years has been about, setting ourselves up and getting cap room for this summer and trying to make a better atmosphere and to win as many games as we could."

"There are many things that we want to do. However, one major component is producing as much cap space as we could. Though, I do not think it is everything."

McGrady spoke about the trade this afternoon on his web page.

He wrote, "I can't wait to get back on the court to keep doing what I like to do. I'm excited to be in New York and look forward to wearing the Knicks' uniform. As I know that I will and can contribute to this association."

"It is a dream to play in New York and there is nothing that compares to playing in the Garden. Knick admirers are some of the most passionate and knowledgeable fans in this league, and it will be an honor to play in front of them and to play for the great city of New York."

McGrady was working out in Chicago with known coach Tim Grover. "Put him in a uniform and let him go on Saturday," Grover told the Post. "He is very thrilled."

Knicks will add McGrady and backup guard Sergio Rodriguez, as D'Antoni likes them. The Knicks relinquished Hill, Larry Hughes, and 2 conditional first round picks. The 2012 draft pick is secluded only if they get the number one pick.

Jeffries and Hill went to Houston that made the 3 way deal to obtain the popular Kevin Martin from Sacramento. The Kings got Carl Landry from Houston, whom they coveted, Hughes and Joey Dorsey.

Walsh added, "Tracy McGrady was one of the premiere players in our league over the past decade and we have every indication that he is committed and healthy to re-establish himself as one of best in our game. We also added Sergio, who will immediately help us."
