When Spencer Hawes hobbled off the court at Conseco Fieldhouse, he knew that his knee had a problem. But he never thought that it would end his season.
Hawes will miss the last 6 regular season games for the Kings after a MRI exposed a deep bone injury in the back of his left knee and joint.
Today, Hawes will meet with Dr. Lawrence Holland in Seattle for his personal opinion. Holland did surgery on Hawes' left knee before. The center had an arthroscopic operation before his rookie season in 2007 and a micro-fracture process when he was 14 years old.
Hawes was injured during the 4th quarter of Tuesday's 102-95 loss against Indiana when a Pacer player kneed the back portion of his left knee.
"That is the thing,"Hawes said. "When I am just feeling excellent, knee came again. It is too wearisome to put into words."
Hawes said that he did not hear a "pop" as players with tendon injuries usually hear. He ran up and down the court a few times before leaving the game.
Hawes said that he's going to see Holland to see if the injury is linked to his 2007 surgery or if the hit caused it.
"This time the hit was at a strange angle," Hawes said. "It distorted in a little spot. It was just an uncomfortable position."
The injury ends what has been an inconsistent 3rd season for Hawes.
He was uncomfortable before camp when he didn't report to the summer league.
It was thought that Hawes would be the starting center from day one, but he started the season as a reserve player. Hawes ended up starting 59 out of the 72 games in which he played.
Hawes drew ire of Paul Westphal for remarks made about his substitution patterns. As the effect of this, Hawes was benched on February 23rd against Detroit.
"It has been hard,Hawes" said. "It has been annoying. But it kind narrates to my knee, it is not what occurs at first; it is how you return."
Hawes averaged 6.1 rebounds and 10 points, both under previous season's marks.
Westphal said, "I feel he is a lot better defensively. I feel he is working to adjust, we asked him to do so. I think he began to do what we asked him to do."
