After participating in just 7 games since coming back from knee surgery, New Orleans Hornets' point guard, Chris Paul, tore a ligament in the middle finger of his right hand and will not be able to play the remainder of this season.
Paul first injured the finger during his first game back from knee surgery against the Dallas Mavericks on March 22nd, but he didn't stop playing. His finger was hit again in a game played on Friday versus the Memphis Grizzles, but he performed the next night against the New Jersey Nets. Close to the finish of Tuesday's practice, Paul injured the finger once more during a defensive play in the post, after he bumped into Morris Peterson.
"The best thing for me is to relax and get well soon," Paul said after the Hornets lost by a score of 104-103 against the Charlotte Bobcats on Wednesday night. "I pretty much knew it was messed up, because of this I was making try to delay having a MRI. It is crazy because it happened in the first game that I returned and I have been using my fingers taped up in the games. After that day in practice, I said that the middle finger of my right hand is hurting, and it is not getting better."
Jeff Bower, Hornets coach, said that Paul had relentless pain and hurt his finger, the MRI exam was completed on Wednesday afternoon, and a tear in his finger was exposed. The team said that no surgical treatment will be necessary, but it will take about 7 weeks before he can play again.
It's been a season of injuries for Paul; because of these injuries he missed 8 games at the begging of the year with a twisted left ankle.
Paul's most dangerous injury happened when he bumped into a camera during a game against the Chicago Bulls on January 29th and injured the meniscus ligament in his left knee, which needed surgical treatment and was the reason why he missed 25 games.
"It is a hard time for him, and I am very sad he has to go through whatever is going on," Bower said. "We'll have to adjust as players to struggle and get some victories."
Paul has missed 33 games, over all; the most amount of games he has missed since he was the Hornets 1st round pick in 2005.
Paul finished the season with an average of 10.7 assists and 18.7 points per game. He was choosen by the coaches of the Western Conference for his 3rd straight All Star Game, but was not able to perform because of the knee injury.
"When it rains, it pours." Peterson said. "It is bad luck that he will miss the last and final 4 games of the season. However, he never complained about this."
