McGrady says retirement is a possibility

Odds & News | Webmaster ( Fri 23rd, April 2010 )

The veteran swingman of the New York Knicks, Tracy McGrady, remains positive that a big preparation program during the summer can help him recover the form that made him a star throughout his NBA career.

However, if his game does not come back, he will leave the NBA, he said last Wednesday.

"If it doesn't happen this summer, I will run off into the sunset,"McGrady told news reporters before sitting out the season finale, while the Knicks lost the game (131-113) at Toronto.

"If I can go through a new off season of working my [butt] off, and I do not feel I am getting any better, I can not see myself improving the game I am presently playing at. I just do not see it occurring," added McGrady.

McGrady played in only 65 games, during the past 2 seasons after battling injuries and recovering from micro fracture surgery on his left knee. The last 24 of those games were with the Knicks, who obtained McGrady in a deal with the Houston Rockets in February.

McGrady scored 26 points in his first appearance with the Knicks, against the Thunder, on February 20th. However, he broke the 20 point plateau just 2 more times over the season, with an average of 8.2 points per game, which is much lower than his career average of 21.5 points per game.

"After I thought that I had something in the tank, there were some games I played well. I was truly trying to stay safe from injury," McGrady told the media on Wednesday.

"Coach Mike D'Antoni knew I wouldn't be the T-Mac he was competing against when he was at Phoenix," McGrady said. "I recognized I was not going to be the same, but it was excellent for me to escape from there and see where I was at physically after missing one and a half years of basketball."

Still, McGrady is expecting a summer of strong preparation to extend his career. He is a free agent now and that is why his future is unsure in New York, he expects he can join a contender next season or at least look like the player who won a couple of NBA scoring titles.

"This summer, I'll continue to work hard and get myself in fine shape and get the best trainer money can buy to get myself where I need to be."
