Mavs not Kidd-ing around in win over Kings

Sat 1st, March 2008

Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Jason Kidd had a season-high 21 points, and added 11 rebounds and nine assists, as the Dallas Mavericks pulled away to beat the Sacramento Kings, 115-106.

Dirk Nowitzki had a game-high 34 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for Dallas, which rebounded from a three-point loss at San Antonio Thursday night to win its fourth in five games.

"I remember earlier in the season, I think we played San Antonio and came back and played against Denver, and we didn't play well that night," Dallas head coach Avery Johnson said. "But for us to even come out here and get 115 points and play the way we did, I thought it was great."

Jerry Stackhouse provided 23 points off the bench, while Josh Howard finished with 20 points and nine boards for the Mavericks, who have won eight of the last 10 meetings with the Kings.

Beno Udrih and Kevin Martin each scored 25, while Ron Artest added 22 points for Sacramento, which has lost four in a row. Mikki Moore had 12 rebounds to go with nine points in the loss.

The Kings had been down by as many as nine early in the fourth quarter, but rallied to stay close, and with 2:19 left, Martin drained a three to bring Sacramento within 103-102.

Stackhouse followed that up with a quick three of his own, though with 1:17 left, Artest was fouled, and made both. The free throws trimmed Dallas' lead to 106-104, but the Kings got no closer.

Nowitzki followed the free throws with a fadeaway jumper near the foul line as the clock rolled under a minute, increasing the Mavs' lead to four. The Kings missed their next four shots, and were simultaneously forced to foul.

After Kidd made 1-of-2 from the line to push Dallas' lead to 109-104 with under half a minute remaining, Stackhouse made 6-of-6 free throws to seal the game.

"We didn't have many problems scoring against them," Sacramento head coach Reggie Theus said. "That wasn't the issue. I just thought that they're a great basketball team and when it's all said and done...they came up with the rebounds when they really needed them."

A close first quarter was dominated by Nowitzki and Udrih, who each scored 12. Nowitzki hit a dozen points with a jumper as time expired on the first quarter, putting Dallas in front 30-28.

The Mavericks couldn't pull away, though, and only took a 57-54 edge into halftime, and led 84-81 after three quarters.

Malik Allen, Nowitzki, and Stackhouse started the final stanza with consecutive buckets, giving Dallas a 90-81 edge. But Sacramento scored the next seven points, and the game was close down the stretch.
