Kobe continues to play like an MVP

(Sports Network) - The Lakers (44-19) own a three-game advantage over the second place Phoenix Suns in the Pacific Division. They are also tied with the defending world champion San Antonio Spurs for the best record in the Western Conference.

Superstar Kobe Bryant is playing like an MVP and has to be one of the favorites to take home the hardware. The All-Star guard leads the Lakers in scoring (28.1 ppg) and assists (5.3 apg). He is shooting 46.4 percent from the field, including 34.6 percent from beyond the arc and is also averaging 6.1 rebounds per game.

Bryant has scored in double-digits in 62 games and has posted at least 20 points in 50 contests. He has collected 13 double-doubles this season. The 6-6 guard is averaging 29.1 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.5 assists in his last 10 outings.

Los Angeles wraps up a three-game homestand, as it hosts the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday at the Staples Center. It is the second and final meeting of the campaign between the clubs. On February 1, Bryant scored 46 points as the Lakers crushed the Raptors, 121-101, at Air Canada Centre.

The Lakers have won four of the last five contests in the series. Toronto has lost five straight and six of its last seven at the Lakers.

The Raptors are 2-9 at the Lakers.

Los Angeles is 1-1 on its current homestand. On Sunday, Beno Udrih scored 25 points, including the go-ahead free throw with 4.6 seconds left, and Bryant's jumper at the buzzer fell short as the Sacramento Kings upset the Lakers, 114-113.

Bryant finished with 26 points, and Pau Gasol, who had scored the go-ahead basket with 15.1 seconds left, scored 25 points, grabbed seven rebounds and handed out nine assists in the loss to Sacramento for the Lakers, who had their three-game winning streak halted. Lamar Odom ended with 16 points and 10 boards in defeat.

The Lakers are 22-8 at home this season. After Tuesday's contest, they will embark on a tough three-game road trip. LA will visit Houston, Dallas and Utah on the upcoming swing.

Gasol is averaging 20.4 points, 8.4 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 17 games as a Laker. He is shooting an impressive 58.4 percent from the floor. The seven- foot Gasol has scored in double-digits in all 17 contests has collected six double-doubles during that span.

LA has scored over 100 points in six straight and 14 of its last 15 games.
