T-Mac, Rockets edge Warriors to get back on track

Sat 22nd, March 2008

Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Tracy McGrady scored 26 points and Bobby Jackson made a huge three-pointer late in the fourth quarter, as the Rockets got back on the winning track with a 109-106 victory over the playoff-hopeful Golden State Warriors.

The Rockets, who had their franchise-record 22-game win streak -- the second- longest string in NBA history -- ended on Tuesday by Boston, snapped a two- game skid. Houston lost at New Orleans the following night, but now the Rockets find themselves tied with the Hornets for first place in the Southwest Division.

Shane Battier and Carl Landry each had 17 points for the Rockets, who are also a game behind the Los Angeles Lakers for the top spot in the Western Conference.

Baron Davis scored 27 for the Warriors, who are 1 1/2 games ahead of Denver for the final playoff spot in the West. Golden State had that margin trimmed by a game after the Nuggets won at New Jersey on Friday.

"We didn't take care of the ball well, and I thought defensively we didn't play with a sense of urgency," Davis said. "We gave them a lot easy buckets and a lot of open shots and that's something we talked about before the game."

Monta Ellis had 24 points, while Al Harrington tallied 18 points and 14 rebounds for Golden State. Mickael Pietrus had 16 points and 13 rebounds, and Stephen Jackson 15 points in a losing cause.

Bobby Jackson's three-pointer from the right side gave Houston a 100-97 lead with 2:05 remaining, and the Rockets pushed the advantage to 104-99 on a pair of free throws from Battier with 55.1 seconds left. That came right after Davis and Pietrus both missed three-pointers.

Ellis drove in a for layup, and after Jackson missed a long jumper, Davis made a layup for a one-point difference with 18.5 seconds left.

Rafer Alston hit two free throws for Houston with 12 seconds to go, and then Davis missed a three-pointer. Landry made 1-of-2 at the foul line for a 107-103 margin, but Davis came back with a three with 3.8 seconds remaining.

Luther Head then made a pair of foul shots for Houston with 1.1 ticks left before Alston tipped away the ensuing inbounds pass by the Warriors to end the game.

Bobby Jackson scored 16, Alston 13 and Head 11 for the Rockets, who shot 47.6 percent from the field.

Golden State bolted to a 17-6 lead before Houston rallied, but the Rockets trailed 29-26 going into the second. It was tight until the half with the Rockets ahead 52-50 at the intermission. Houston held a 75-73 edge going into the fourth.
