Lakers, Warriors open home-and-home set

Sun 23rd, March 2008

(Sports Network) - A preview of a possible first round matchup of the Western Conference playoffs is on the NBA schedule, as the Los Angeles Lakers host the Golden State Warriors tonight at the Staples Center.

The Lakers lead the second place Phoenix Suns by one game in the Pacific Division and are the top seed in the West standings, while Golden State is No. 8 and is 1 1/2 games ahead of Denver.

This is the first game of a home-and-home set. Golden State will host the Lakers on Monday at ORACLE Arena.

The teams have split a pair of contests this season. Golden State has lost nine straight at the Lakers.

The last time the Warriors defeated the Lakers on the road was on January 22, 2003.

The Lakers, who are a half game ahead of No. 2 New Orleans in the West, have won three in a row. Superstar Kobe Bryant scored 23 points to lead the Lakers to a convincing 130-105 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics on Friday at the Staples Center.

Luke Walton added 17 points in the win over Seattle for the Lakers, who have won 17 of their last 21 games overall. Ronny Turiaf scored 14 points and tied a career high with six assists.

Los Angeles is 24-8 as the host this season. The Lakers have won two in a row at the Staples Center.

The Lakers continue to play without forward Pau Gasol, who is sidelined with a sprained left ankle. Gasol, who was acquired from Memphis in a trade, is averaging 18.8 points and 7.9 rebounds in 19 games with the Lakers this season. The seven-foot Gasol has missed four straight games and is expected to return next week.

Golden State tries to rebound from a tough loss. Tracy McGrady scored 26 points and Bobby Jackson made a huge three-pointer late in the fourth quarter, as the Houston Rockets got back on the winning track with a 109-106 victory over the playoff-hopeful Warriors at ORACLE Arena.

Baron Davis scored 27 points in the loss for the Warriors, who have dropped two of their last three games overall. Monta Ellis had 24 points, while Al Harrington collected 18 points and 14 rebounds in defeat.

The Warriors are 19-15 on the road this season.
