(Sports Network) - The Boston Celtics will try to end one of their few losing streaks of this 2007-08 when the Eastern Conference favorites welcome the resurgent Phoenix Suns to TD Banknorth Garden this evening.
Boston comes into this intriguing matchup off back-to-back losses to New Orleans and Philadelphia, with the red-hot 76ers entering the Garden and dealing the Celtics a 95-90 defeat on Monday.
The Sixers put together a game-changing 19-0 run in the fourth quarter and outscored Boston 29-19 in the final period to record their 10th victory in 12 games.
Kevin Garnett led Boston with 18 points and five rebounds, while Leon Powe contributed 16 points and seven boards off the bench in the loss.
Despite those two recent setbacks, the Celtics still own a comfortable five- game advantage on Detroit in the race for the No. 1 playoff seed in the East.
Boston has lost three straight games only once this season, from February 19-22. The final defeat of that string came to the Suns, as Phoenix's Amare Stoudemire delivered 28 points to lead his team to an 85-77 triumph.
The victory was the Suns' fifth in a row over Boston, which hasn't topped Phoenix since a 128-119 win at the Garden on January 28, 2005.
The Suns have been quite hot as of late, ripping off a season-best seven straight wins until falling in overtime at Detroit on Monday. The surge has carried Phoenix into sixth place in the competitive Western Conference, but the team is just 1 1/2 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Lakers in the Pacific Division.
In the Suns' 110-105 defeat to the Pistons, Stoudemire poured in a game-high 33 points and Steve Nash added 23 to go along with nine assists. Former Piston Grant Hill added 15 points and eight rebounds, while Shaquille O'Neal notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in a surprisingly high 37-plus minutes.
Phoenix brings a 21-13 road record into tonight's tilt and is a stellar 22-5 against Eastern Conference clubs this season.
