(Sports Network) - The Atlanta Hawks will try to hold onto the eighth and final playoff spot this evening, when they wrap up a three-game road trip against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.
Atlanta is just two games ahead of Indiana for the eighth and final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference, with four games remaining on the schedule. The Hawks have dropped two of their last three games overall, and fell to 1-1 on the trek following Tuesday's crucial 112-98 loss to the Pacers at Conseco Fieldhouse.
Joe Johnson had 30 points to pace the Hawks, who are 11-28 as the guest this season. Johnson is averaging 28.0 in his last four games. Josh Smith ended with 25 points and 13 boards, while Josh Childress added 16 and 12 rebounds in defeat. The Hawks lost for just the fourth time in their previous 14 games.
New York has won three in a row, and will resume a three-game homestand on Friday versus the Hawks. The Knicks will also host Boston and own a 15-24 record as the host in 2007-08.
In Wednesday's 109-107 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats in the opener of the homestand, Fred Jones scored 15 points off the bench, including the go-ahead three-pointer with 3:47 left, to lead the Knicks to victory.
Jamal Crawford scored 18 points for the Knicks, who won their third straight after dropping five in a row. Zach Randolph scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while David Lee had 11 boards and six points in a winning effort. New York is also unbeaten in its last three home games.
Atlanta is 3-0 against New York this season, and has won five of eight and seven of the last 11 matchups in the series.
The Hawks, though, have lost three of four, 13 of 15 and 14 of the last 17 trips to the Big Apple.
