Sixers, Wizards battle for playoff positioning

(Sports Network) - Two teams battling for playoff positioning square off this evening, as the Washington Wizards host the Philadelphia 76ers from the Verizon Center.

Washington will open a two-game homestand tonight versus the 76ers and Pacers, and owns a 23-16 record in D.C. this season. It has won three of four and six of the last eight games as the host.

The Wizards, who are seeded fifth in the Eastern Conference, had a three-game winning streak stopped after Friday's 102-74 setback to Detroit at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Antawn Jamison led Washington with 15 points and eight rebounds, while DeShawn Stevenson added 11 points.

Washington is two games behind Cleveland for the fourth spot in the East, while both Toronto and Philadelphia are a game behind the Wizards.

Meanwhile, the Sixers have lost two of their last three games, including Friday's 85-76 decision to Indiana at the Wachovia Center. Andre Miller had 23 points and seven boards, as Philly fell back into a tie with the Raptors for the East's seventh seed. Toronto defeated New Jersey last night, 113-85.

Philadelphia has won two straight, three of four and eight of its last 10 contests away from the City of Brotherly Love.

The 76ers are 2-1 against the Wizards this season, but Washington is 6-4 over the past 10 encounters.

The Sixers are winless in their last four trips to the Verizon Center.

These city's hockey teams are currently battling in the first round of the NHL playoffs. The Capitals took a 1-0 lead over the Flyers in the series with a 5-4 victory on Friday night in D.C.
