Hornets still alive for top seed vs. Clippers

(Sports Network) - The playoff-bound Hornets need a win tonight to continue their push for a Southwest Division title and the top seed in the Western Conference, as they host the Los Angeles Clippers at New Orleans Arena.

New Orleans is first in the division standings at a half game ahead of idle San Antonio, but sits a half game behind the Los Angeles Lakers for the top seed in the Western Conference. The Lakers, who host Sacramento on Tuesday, can wrap up the top spot and home-court advantage with a win.

The Hornets try to halt a two-game losing streak. They return home after going 1-2 on a three-game road trip. Their latest loss was against the Sacramento Kings, 94-91, on Saturday at ARCO Arena.

David West finished with 30 points and 15 rebounds in the loss for the Hornets, while MVP candidate Chris Paul collected 14 points and 12 assists.

New Orleans, which plays its final regular-season home game, is 29-11 as the host this season. The Hornets will visit Jason Kidd and the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday at American Airlines Center.

The Clippers have lost five in a row, and are 10-29 as the visitor this season. They play the middle contest of a season-ending three-game road trip tonight, and will visit the Houston Rockets on Wednesday at the Toyota Center.

Cuttino Mobley scored 30 points during a 122-116 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Saturday at ORACLE Arena. Elton Brand ended with 21 points and 14 rebounds for the Clippers, who have dropped two in a row on the road.

The Hornets are 3-0 against the Clippers this season, and have won five straight in the series.
