(Sports Network) - Fresh off a potentially costly home loss, the Charlotte Bobcats will again take the Time Warner Cable Arena court this evening to host the Philadelphia 76ers in a late-season clash.
While the Bobcats are in good position to make the first playoff appearance in the franchise's six-year existence, the young club can't afford to let too many games slip away down the stretch. That may have been the case on Monday, when Toronto rallied in the fourth quarter to come through with a 103-101 decision over Charlotte.
Trailing by six after three quarters, Toronto scored seven straight points to move in front before the teams exchanged lead changes over several minutes. The Raptors claimed a 95-93 advantage on Hedo Turkoglu's three-pointer with 4:22 to go and extended the margin to seven about a minute and a half later, when Jarrett Jack made all three free throws after being fouled from beyond the arc to give his team a 100-93 lead.
The Bobcats' Stephen Jackson then scored five straight points to bring his team within two with 1:18 remaining, and Charlotte was given an opportunity to tie or win in the final seconds when Toronto's Sonny Weems missed both attempts from the free-throw line. However, Raymond Felton's errant pass sailed out of bounds with 3.1 ticks left and the Raptors ran out the final seconds.
"Unfortunately we were out of timeouts and we turned it over, Bobcats head coach Larry Brown said of his team's final offensive touch. "We simply can't do that."
Jackson and Felton both finished with 18 points and Gerald Wallace added 17 for Charlotte, which had won the first two tests of this five-game homestand and three in a row overall. The Bobcats enter tonight's play seventh in the Eastern Conference, two games in front of the Raptors and 3 1/2 ahead of ninth-place Chicago.
The loss snapped a seven-game home winning streak for Charlotte, which owns an excellent 27-9 record at Time Warner Cable Arena in 2009-10. The team hasn't dropped back-to-back outings as the host since setbacks to Orlando and New Orleans on January 23 and February 6, respectively.
The Bobcats will try to rebound against a Philadelphia squad that's just 26-48 for the season, but defeated likely postseason participants Milwaukee and Atlanta last week before falling at home to Oklahoma City on Tuesday. Kevin Durant compiled 26 points and 10 rebounds as the Thunder ended the 76ers' win streak with a 111-93 triumph.
"We just didn't make enough plays," said Philadelphia head coach Eddie Jordan, whose team trailed by double digits for the majority of the night. "[The Thunder] made plays. They made plays on driving to the basket. We just didn't take care of the paint well enough."
Elton Brand did score 22 points for the Sixers in a losing cause, with Andre Iguodala amassing 21 points, eight assists and seven rebounds in a strong all- around performance.
The Bobcats have won two straight and six of the last eight meetings in this series and have topped the Sixers four straight times at home. Philadelphia has prevailed just once in its last nine trips to Charlotte.
