Final Score: LA Lakers 103 - Washington 91
Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Kobe Bryant scored 30 points, including 19 in the first quarter, as the Los Angeles Lakers opened up a big lead and cruised to a 103-91 defeat of the Washington Wizards.
Vladimir Radmanovic had 15 points, and Lamar Odom scored 14 for Los Angeles, which has won two in a row. Sasha Vujacic scored 12 off the bench, and Ronny Turiaf had 13 points.
The Lakers played without Pau Gasol, the seven-footer who they acquired from the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday. He was in attendance, but did not dress.
"I found out (about the trade) after practice and the next thing I know, three hours later, I was on a plane to Los Angeles," Gasol said. "I am really excited and I am trying to digest everything I am going through."
Antawn Jamison scored 21 and had 11 rebounds for Washington, which has lost three in a row. Caron Butler returned after missing the past three games with a hip flexor injury, and finished with 15 points. But, he also had his made free throw streak halted at 73 straight, going 4-of-5 from the line. Nick Young and Roger Mason each scored 14 off the bench.
Bryant came out firing in the first quarter, and single-handedly outscored the entire Wizards team. His 19 points came by way of 6-of-8 shooting and 6-of-6 shooting from the free throw line.
The Lakers doubled up Washington at the end of the stanza, 30-15, holding the Wizards to 27.8 percent shooting.
"I thought we caught them off-guard a little bit," Lakers head coach Phil Jackson said. "I don't know if it was the early game or what, but they just didn't have the kind of rhythm they like to have in their offense."
That set the stage for the entire game, and the Lakers slowly extended their lead to 63-41 at halftime. Bryant cooled down in the second quarter, scoring six points, but the Lakers still had a 65.8 percent shooting mark. The Wizards gave up more points in that half than they have in any half all season.
"You have to compliment the Lakers," Wizards head coach Eddie Jordan said. "They execute at one of the highest levels in the league...I was disappointed in how we couldn't play the full 48 minutes."
The teams traded baskets in the third quarter, and the Lakers led 86-62 going into the fourth. Butler scored the final point of the stanza for Washington, but not before breaking his long streak. He went to the line for a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left and his streak of free throws made standing at 73 straight.
But, he missed the first -- Butler hadn't missed a free throw since December 28 against New Jersey -- ending the NBA's longest active streak.
Bryant drained a three with 7:15 left in the game, giving the Lakers a 97-76 lead, and LA cruised from there.
