Final Score: LA Clippers 103 - New York 94
New York, NY (Sports Network) - Corey Maggette returned from a four-game absence due to the flu to score 19 points, leading seven Clippers in double figures, as Los Angeles pulled away down the stretch to defeat the New York Knicks, 103-94, at Madison Square Garden.
Chris Kaman, who has also been stricken with the flu and a nagging shin injury, returned from a five-game absence to drop in 15 points and grab nine rebounds for the Clippers.
LA snapped a two-game slide to improve to 1-2 on a seven-game road trip. Cuttino Mobley had 14 points, five assists and five rebounds, while Josh Powell chipped in with 13 points and eight boards.
"The second half we just came out and we focused," said Kaman.
Eddy Curry poured in 19 points for the Knicks, who have dropped six in a row. Jamal Crawford scored 16 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter and Quentin Richardson, who left during the second quarter with a sprained right ankle after coming down on Maggette's foot, finished with 14 points. Zach Randolph scored 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds, while Fred Jones added 11 points and seven boards in the loss.
"Our offense didn't get it done in the second half," said David Lee. "We need to keep it up in the third and fourth quarter. When the ball stops moving, it's tough to get points on the board."
After Curry's hook shot put the Knicks ahead 66-55, the Clippers closed the third quarter on a 24-8 spurt to head into the final stanza with a 79-74 lead. Powell's tip-in with 1:49 remaining in the frame put Los Angeles on top 72-70.
The Clippers' cushion grew to 89-81 after Mobley nailed a fadeaway jumper with six minutes to play, but New York battled back and Crawford's jump shot cut the deficit to 91-89.
Powell then made consecutive shots to push the lead to six, 95-89, and Los Angeles sealed the win from the charity stripe.
The Clippers held a slim 31-30 edge after the first quarter.
With the Knicks in front 37-36 less than three minutes into the second quarter, Lee sank a pair from the foul line to spark a 12-0 run. Jared Jeffries then knocked down a trey and Renaldo Balkman connected on a driving lay-in before Curry made two layups. Mardy Collins' free throw capped the flurry and gave New York a 49-36 lead.
Later in the frame, Los Angeles went an 8-0 run to trim the margin to 57-51, but Randolph drilled a three-pointer in the dying seconds and New York carried a 60-51 advantage into halftime.
