Final Score: LA Clippers 102 - Toronto 98
Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Corey Maggette tied a season-high with 35 points, and he also grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Los Angeles Clippers past the Toronto Raptors, 102-98, at Air Canada Centre.
Cuttino Mobley and Al Thornton each chipped in 19 points for the Clippers, who won for the second time in their last three games. Chris Kaman scored 16 points and pulled down 12 boards for his 30th double-double of the season.
Chris Bosh gave 29 points and 12 rebounds, good for his 22nd double-double of the season, for the Raptors, who have alternated wins and losses for the past six games. Jamario Moon had 16 points, while Andrea Bargnani and Carlos Delfino had 14 points apiece.
Thornton connected on a layup with 53.5 seconds remaining to make it a two- possession game. However, Bosh was fouled on a layup and cashed in for a three-point play to make it 98-96, with 48.6 seconds left.
Neither team could get any points on their next possession and when the Clippers got the ball back Maggette was fouled and hit both shots. The 2-for-2 showing made it 100-96 with 12.4 showing on the clock.
Four points is as close as the Raptors would get, as the Clippers escaped Canada with a win.
Jose Calderon had 11 points and 14 assists in defeat.
The Raptors took a 26-21 lead after the first stanza and held a 58-50 advantage at the break.
A Moon dunk and a Bosh layup increased Toronto's lead to 11 points, 65-54, with just over 8 1/2 minutes to go in the third frame.
Los Angeles eventually clipped its deficit to six points when Maggette was fouled on a three-point attempt and went 3-for-3 from the stripe to make it 68-62 with 6:11 to play in the third quarter.
"I'm working hard like I always did since the beginning of the season," Bargnani said. "We were not ready to play from the beginning of the game and we let Maggette get to the free throw line too much."
After Delfino's bucket made it an eight-point Raptors lead, a 7-2 run capped by a Mobley jumper pulled the Clippers within three, 72-69.
The Raptors again increased their cushion to eight points, 77-69, though, the Clippers would score the final nine points of the quarter to take a 78-77 lead into the final 12 minutes. Maggette hit a trey from the left wing for the go- ahead score with 22.5 ticks left.
The Clippers held the Raptors scoreless for the final 1:53 of the third quarter.
Los Angeles scored the first nine points of the fourth to take an 87-77 lead with 7:58 to play.
The Clippers held their 10-point cushion until two Bosh free throws and a Bargnani jumper with his foot on the line cut the lead to six.
Kaman then connected on a hook shot, but Moon answered with a three-ball that pulled the Raptors within five, 91-86, with just under six minutes on the clock.
Another two free throws from Bosh pulled the Raptors within three, but a three-point play from Thornton, with 3:11 on the clock, gave Los Angeles a 94-88 lead.
Moments later, Thornton's dunk gave LA a 96-90 advantage, but Bargnani drained a three on Toronto's ensuing possession to make it a three-point game.
"He [Thornton] has been up and down this year, but for the most part he has been up," Kaman said. "It is kind of a shame that he didn't make the All-Star Rookie game. He is a fighter, he gets in there and plays hard, gets his nose dirty. He is going to be a special player."
