Final Score: Cleveland 106 - Indiana 97
Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - LeBron James posted a triple-double for a second straight night with 31 points, 14 rebounds and 12 assists, catapulting Cleveland to a 106-97 win over the Indiana Pacers.
It's been a great post All-Star break start for James, the MVP of the midseason contest on Sunday. He had his fifth triple-double of the year in Tuesday's home loss to Houston, but a night later the Cavs snapped a two-game skid as James shot 11-of-22 from the field.
James also became the first player in 20 years to have triple-doubles in back- to-back games twice in the same season. The last player to accomplish the feat was Magic Johnson in 1988.
"It's a tremendous feat," James said. "But I'm just happy we got the win."
Larry Hughes added 19 points and Drew Gooden 17 for the Cavaliers, who beat the Pacers for a sixth straight time. Zydrunas Ilgauskas contributed 14 points and 17 boards in the win.
However, the win may have been costly as guard Daniel Gibson went down with a sprained left ankle in the third quarter. X-rays taken at the arena were negative. Gibson had 15 points, all on three-point shots, before leaving.
Danny Granger had 30 points and eight rebounds for the Pacers, losers of three in a row. Troy Murphy ended with 20 points and Jeff Foster added nine points and 15 rebounds, while Kareem Rush scored 12 in defeat.
"That was another game that we could have won," Granger said. "We choked and made bad plays during the stretch at the end."
Two free throws from Marquis Daniels gave Indiana a 94-92 edge with 5:11 left, but Ilgauskas sank a jumper and 37 seconds later hit a free throw for a 95-94 Cavs lead with 4:23 left.
It was the start of a 10-point run for the Cavs. Ilgauskas canned another jumper and after Pacers coach Jim O'Brien was hit with a technical foul, Ilgauskas converted the free throw.
James made a foul shot and Hughes capped the burst with a three-pointer for an insurmountable 102-94 lead with 1:39 to go.
Granger drilled a three 11 seconds later, but James and Hughes combined to make four foul shots down the stretch.
Cleveland carried a 34-26 lead after the opening quarter, but Indiana came back with eight in a row to start the second. Cleveland led 60-54 at the half.
Indiana's Travis Diener and Gibson were both going for a loose ball with 4:55 left in the third quarter. Diener dove and collided with Gibson's lower left leg. Gibson had to be helped to the locker room.
"I thought not another one, not again," James said of Gibson's injury. "He's one of our top six players and we can't afford to be losing any more of those guys."
Indiana gained an 81-79 edge going into the fourth.
