NBA Game Summary - Washington at New Orleans

Final Score: Washington 95 - New Orleans 92

New Orleans, LA (Sports Network) - DeShawn Stevenson scored a career-best 33 points and hit the winning shot from beyond the arc at the buzzer, boosting Washington to a 95-92 win over the New Orleans Hornets.

Brendan Haywood and Roger Mason each added 12 points, and Antawn Jamison had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Wizards, who have won two in a row for the first time since January 18-21. Washington also won for just the second time in its last 11 road contests and for only the third time in 13 games overall.

Antonio Daniels tallied 10 points for Washington, which also snapped a 10-game road skid versus the Hornets.

Stevenson accounted for 16 of the Wizards 27 fourth-quarter points, going 5-of-9 from the field, as well as connecting on all five of his free throw attempts.

"We've been playing great teams and right now, we've been playing it close, but we can't lose," Stevenson said. "We kept it close; we kept going to Antawn. I kept getting some and-one calls some easy buckets. I think as a whole, we kept it together."

Chris Paul led the way with 22 points and eight assists for the Hornets, who fell a game behind San Antonio for the top spot in the Southwest Division. Morris Peterson chipped in 18 points for New Orleans, losers of three straight games, tying a season-high.

"If this team doesn't think people are going to play us tough, then they are delusional," Hornets coach Byron Scott said. "Teams are going to play us tough and aggressive, but the biggest thing is that we played their style of basketball. We never got up and down the floor; we never caused turnovers and never pushed the tempo. We just walked it up all night long and when you play a team that executes as well as they do, you are going to be in for a long night."

Brendan Haywood's layup pulled the Wizards within 91-90 with 51.8 seconds left, and then New Orleans' David West was called for an offensive foul.

However, Jamison missed a jumper, but Haywood got the offensive rebound and Stevenson nailed two foul shots with 14.4 seconds left for a 92-91 Washington edge.

Hilton Armstrong was then fouled by Washington's Andray Blatche. Armstrong missed the first try and then the second also with 7.3 seconds left. However, Jamison was whistled for being in the lane, and Armstrong connected with another attempt to tie the game.

Without a timeout left, the Wizards got the ball to Stevenson, who launched a perfect shot from the left wing to end the game.

"I went to the ball just like I did all night," Stevenson said. "I got up to half court and I saw Peja (Stojakovic) try to steal the ball, I got past him and I was going to go to the basket. In my mind, I was thinking it was a tie game, so I just pulled up and no one was around me and it went in."

Jamison struggled most of the night, going 3-of-16 from the field.

West had 13 points and Stojakovic 11 for the Hornets, who also got 11 boards from Tyson Chandler.

New Orleans led by as many as 10 in the opening quarter and by a 28-20 margin going into the second. Consecutive three-pointers from Stojakovic moved the Hornets' lead to 50-35 with under three minutes left in the second, and it was 52-41 at the half.

Washington came back though, pulling within 56-55 following a Stevenson three with 7:38 left in the third. New Orleans went up nine later in the period, but carried only a 74-68 edge going into the fourth.

New Orleans' lead was as high as seven early in the final period.
