Final Score: Minnesota 102 - Orlando 101
Orlando, FL (Sports Network) - Ryan Gomes hit the game-winning free throws with 2.9 seconds left and Hedo Turkoglu fired an airball at the buzzer as the Minnesota Timberwolves escaped with a 102-101 victory over Orlando at Amway Arena.
"I didn't want to think about it too much," said Gomes. "When you start thinking about it too much then it might throw your rhythm off and your timing off. So I just went up there and shot them like nobody was in the gym. They both fell down."
Randy Foye had a game-high 25 points for the Timberwolves, who snapped a six- game skid. Rashad McCants ended with 19 points off the bench, while Al Jefferson poured in 18 to go along with 11 rebounds. Gomes also chipped in 14 points, while Corey Brewer added 12.
Turkoglu had 23 points and seven assists for Orlando, which was denied its 50th win of the campaign. Dwight Howard ended with 20 points and 14 boards, while Maurice Evans donated 17 points in a losing cause.
Howard tied a franchise record for most double-doubles in a season as he notched No. 68. That pulls him even with Shaquille O'Neal for the record, which was set during the 1992-93 campaign.
Trailing by seven to open the fourth quarter, Minnesota responded by drilling five of its first seven shots, cutting it 91-86 with plenty of time left. Evans answered with huge three-pointer for the Magic, however, pushing the lead back to eight points.
The T-Wolves then made a game of it down the stretch, pulling within 99-97 inside of two minutes to play. Turkoglu's driving layup gave Orlando some breathing room, but McCants fired back with a trey to cut it to 101-100 with 41.2 seconds remaining.
As time then ticked down inside the final moments, the Timberwolves battled for control of the ball. During the scramble, Howard was called for a foul, sending Gomes to the line. He calmly stroked both shots to put Minnesota ahead 102-101 with just 2.9 ticks left.
Rashard Lewis inbounded the ball to Turkoglu, but he missed badly from beyond the arc as the horn sounded.
"I should've taken a better shot in that situation," said Turkoglu. "But in the best situation, I'd have a better choice. I know it was bad at that time but I tried to get a little space and tried to take the best shot.
"Things like that shouldn't come down to the last second shot," he continued. "We should have taken care of business way easier but sometimes shots don't fall down."
Minnesota finished 17-for-20 from the stripe as a team, while Orlando was just 11-for-20.
The Magic looked strong in the early going, converting on eight of their first 10 field goal attempts while out-working Minnesota at both ends. The Magic led 20-13 halfway through, but the T-Wolves answered with a 12-5 run to tie it up.
Orlando closed on a strong note, though, as Turkoglu drilled a three to give the Magic a 37-31 lead after the first. The rally bridged into the second quarter, as the club used a 7-2 push at the start, capped by Lewis' two-handed dunk.
The momentum then went back and forth, as the Magic rolled into the break with a 63-54 lead.
Both clubs looked sluggish afterward, as the Magic were just 4-of-12 to start the second half. The Wolves countered with a 9-2 run, meanwhile, trimming the deficit to seven.
Orlando bounced back, though, and it was 81-74 heading to the fourth.
