Final Score: Toronto 103 - Orlando 104
Orlando, FL (Sports Network) - Dwight Howard had 29 points and 20 rebounds and the Orlando Magic held off multiple rallies to take a two-game series lead over the Toronto Raptors with a 104-103 victory in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal.
Howard shot 12-for-17 from the floor, blocked three shots and corralled one final rebound as the horn sounded after Toronto's Chris Bosh missed on a potential game-winning jumper. Jameer Nelson and Rashard Lewis had 18 points apiece for the Magic and Hedo Turkoglu scored 12 - including the go-ahead bucket - to go with nine rebounds.
Bosh went for 29 points and 10 boards to lead Toronto, but scored just six in the second half. Jason Kapono added 20 off the Raptors bench, while Jose Calderon contributed 18 points and five assists. Toronto, which fell to 2-4 all-time in Game 2s, will return home to host Game 3 Thursday night at Air Canada Centre.
Back-to-back threes by Keith Bogans had Orlando up 98-91 with under four minutes remaining, but Carlos Delfino and Calderon responded with consecutive treys for Toronto, trimming the margin back to one. Lewis grabbed a Turkoglu airball and converted the putback for a 100-97 Magic lead with just over two minutes showing, but Calderon buried another three -- this one from the top of the key -- to tie the game.
Delfino attacked the rim and drew a foul on the ensuing Toronto possession, but hit just 1-of-2 from the line, and Turkoglu put Orlando back on top for good the next trip down with his first points since the opening stanza.
With just over 30 seconds remaining, Turkoglu sliced his way into the lane, took contact from Bosh and kissed the ball high off the glass and through the hoop for a 102-101 Orlando lead. Bosh went at Howard at the other end, but his shot was altered either by Howard's attempt to block it or Nelson, who was sneaking in from behind. Either way, Nelson came away with the loose ball and the Raptors eventually fouled Turkoglu with 18.7 ticks showing.
Turkoglu hit both free throws for a three-point Magic advantage, but Delfino scored quickly to keep Toronto alive. With 9.6 seconds left and Orlando trying to inbound, the Magic's Keyon Dooling was called for a questionable foul away from the ball when he extended his arm across Calderon's face and Calderon went down.
The result was one final shot for the Raptors, and Bosh got a clean look from the left elbow. But the attempt clanged off the back rim, and Howard secured the rebound, and in turn, Orlando's two-game series advantage.
"I was real comfortable with it," Bosh said of his final shot. "I knew that (the defender) was going to back up and I was going to have space. The last time when I drove to the basket I didn't get a call so I didn't want to put it in the referee's hands. I wanted to get a clean look. I felt I did a decent job. I got a decent look and just missed the shot."
Bogans and Maurice Evans scored nine points each for Orlando, while Dooling totaled seven.
"We wanted to take care of homecourt and we did that," Lewis said. "It was a little scary at the end. They went to Bosh and he was hitting his jumpers early in the game. Good thing he finally missed one, it came at the right time when he missed the shot."
Delfino finished with 16 points and six boards for the Raptors, who trailed by as many as 18 in the first half and nine in the fourth quarter.
Orlando raced out to a 14-4 lead in the opening five minutes, and routinely got loose for layups throughout the first quarter en route to taking a 35-18 lead into the second. A 9-2 spurt to start the second had the Raptors back within 10, but Bogans and Dooling sandwiched a Kapono floater with a pair of threes, stretching the Magic lead back to 43-29.
Toronto trimmed the margin to 46-41 by the five-minute mark after a Bosh three-point play and a transition bucket from Delfino, and Bosh's free throws with 3:36 left after a Turkoglu flagrant foul cut the deficit to 51-48. With just over a minute and a half remaining, Bosh knocked down an uncontested three to make it a two-point game, and Orlando's halftime lead was only 59-57.
Andrea Bargnani gave Toronto its first lead of the night, 61-59, with two straight jumpers to open the third quarter. Howard, though, scored six points during a 7-0 run that allowed Orlando to reclaim the advantage at 71-66, and it was 77-68 after back-to-back threes by Nelson just ahead of five minutes.
Orlando held an 83-78 edge entering the fourth, and couldn't shake the Raptors even after extending the margin to nine. Calderon and Bargnani hit consecutive jumpers, and Bargnani canned a three off a pick-and-pop with Calderon, suddenly making it an 89-87 game with 7:05 remaining.
