Final Score: Cleveland 100 - Washington 97
Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Delonte West's three-pointer with just 5.4 seconds on the clock lifted Cleveland over Washington, 100-97, in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.
With the game deadlocked at 97, Cavs superstar LeBron James drew the defense and kicked the ball to West in the left corner, who calmly stroked a three to give the Cavs the 100-97 lead.
After a timeout, Washington went to Gilbert Arenas at the top of the circle. The sharpshooter created some space and got a look at a three over West but his shot bounced harmlessly off the rim as Cleveland took a commanding 3-1 series lead.
James had 34 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists for the Cavaliers, who bounced back from an embarrassing 108-72 loss in Game 3. West added 21 points and finished 5-of-8 from beyond the arc.
"I've always been a guy who trusted my teammates," said James of West's game- winning shot. "This is a team game and I know that I can't win without my teammates. I also need to make sure that I continue to give them confidence. It means a lot more for Delonte to make that shot as our starting point guard because at times he's been tentative. I've always had confidence in my teammates to knock that shot down."
Daniel Gibson pitched in with 12 points off the bench for Cleveland.
Antawn Jamison had 23 points and 11 boards for the Wizards, while Caron Butler netted 19 points.
Arenas, who was listed as questionable before the game thanks to his surgically repaired left knee, had 10 points and was just 3-of-8 from the floor.
Game 5 is set for Wednesday at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.
"The most important thing is that everything this whole season comes down to one game," said Jamison. "Our heads are not down. It's tough to lose a close game like that after you fought back. We have to do the exact same thing they did. We have to keep our composure, control the board, and find a way to win on the road. If we find a way to win on the road than we can come back here to our hostile environment and it's a whole different story."
Cleveland entered the fourth quarter with a seven-point advantage but the Wizards hung around and chipped away. DeShawn Stevenson buried a three with 7:42 on the clock to make it a one-possession game, 88-85.
Moments later Arenas had a chance to deadlock things and had a good look at a three but came up way short. Gibson took advantage at the other end, depositing a three of his own to give the Cavs a little breathing room, 93-87, with 5:10 to go.
After a James free throw, Washington made another push with consecutive buckets by Brendon Haywood and Butler and were down, 94-91, with 3:44 remaining.
Just 31 seconds later, Gibson had the answer by draining a three from the left wing to stretch's Cleveland's lead back to six, 97-91.
The Cavs went cold from there and Butler hit a jumper before Arenas made a pair of free throws with under a minute left to draw the Wizards within a bucket, 97-95.
James' mid-range jumper went in-and-out at the other end and Arenas deadlocked things with a wild off-balance bank shot with just 28 seconds on the clock.
The Wizards raced out to an early 9-4 lead after Haywood deposited a slam with less than three minutes gone.
Cleveland survived the opening salvo, however, and took its first lead of the contest when Zydrunas Ilgauskas buried a jumper to make it 16-15 with a little over four minutes to go in the opening quarter.
Things remained tight from there but Washington took a 28-24 edge when Jamison stroked a three with 16 seconds left in the first.
The Wizards led by as many as eight points, 35-27, after Roger Mason connected on a jumper with 7:34 left until intermission.
But, Cleveland rebounded and closed the half with a 27-9 run. James had 13 points in the burst, including a three and a pair of slams, as the Cavs took a 54-44 lead into the locker room.
Cleveland built is lead to 15 midway through the third quarter after James got hot from beyond the arc. The swingman sandwiched a Haywood free throw with a pair of treys to make it a 67-52 game.
Sensing their season slipping away, Washington rallied with an 18-5 spurt. Stevenson highlighted the push with a three and a slam and the Wizards found themselves within a bucket, 72-70, with 2:31 left in the third.
James stemmed the tide with a driving layup and the Cavaliers extended their lead to 80-73, heading to the final frame.
