Final Score: Detroit 93 - Philadelphia 84
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Tayshaun Prince was nearly perfect from the field and finished with 23 points, as the Detroit Pistons used a big third quarter to pick up a 93-84 win over Philadelphia to even their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series after four games.
The foursome of Prince, Rasheed Wallace, Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton took control for Detroit, which overcame a 14-point deficit in the second quarter by using separate 11-0 and 10-0 runs in the third. Wallace had 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Billups and Hamilton each scored 18. The four veterans accounted for Detroit's final 36 points, and Prince missed just one of his 12 shots all night.
"Everybody knows we're good under pressure," Billups said. "I hate that we put ourselves in this position a lot of times, but we are good under pressure and we came out and showed that tonight."
Antonio McDyess, playing with a mask after suffering a broken nose in Friday's 95-75 loss, tallied 10 points for the Pistons. McDyess had surgery on Saturday, but came back with a strong defensive effort just one day later.
"McDyess was awesome tonight," Billups said. "He came out and he basically willed us. He was getting every rebound. He was blocking shots, taking charges. He just wanted it. He was more vocal today than he usually is."
Thaddeus Young had 15 points and nine rebounds for the seventh-seeded Sixers, who also got 13 points apiece from Andre Miller and Willie Green. Samuel Dalembert ended with 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Andre Iguodala also scored 12 in defeat.
"They just kind of turned it on," Sixers coach Maurice Cheeks said of the third quarter. "Their defense just got better. Rip Hamilton started making shots. Billups started driving the lane and the game just turned. It's amazing the flip of the switch the way it turned. Obviously it turned in their favor."
Game 5 of the best-of-seven series is Tuesday at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
"Game 5 we have to take care of the basketball, play smart, move the basketball, get good shots and get our defense set." Prince said.
Down by 10 at the half, the Pistons came out firing on all cylinders to start the third quarter, pouring in the first 11 points. Billups and Wallace nailed three-pointers, and Prince's floater from the left baseline capped the flurry for Detroit's first lead of the game at 47-46.
"We just had to come out and try to make a statement in the first couple of minutes," Hamilton said. "We just had to match their energy. They really try to feed off their crowd."
Philadelphia fired back with the next five points, but the series of runs continued with Detroit pulling in front for good thanks to an ensuing 10-0 run, culminated by a layup from McDyess inside of six minutes left in the period.
A pair of free throws from Hamilton expanded the margin to 66-56 and Detroit's lead stood at 70-62 going into the fourth quarter. The Pistons were 5-of-7 from beyond the arc in the third, including a 3-of-3 effort from Wallace.
The Pistons held the Sixers without a basket for nearly the first three minutes of the last quarter, all the while building to a 76-63 lead.
Hamilton had 10 consecutive Detroit points at one juncture of the fourth quarter. His layup, after the Pistons came up with a loose ball near midcourt, moved the lead to 80-65 with 8 1/2 minutes left.
The closest the Sixers could get after that was seven points, and that didn't come until Lou Williams hit a three-pointer for a 91-84 difference with 37.4 seconds remaining.
Over the last two games Prince is 19-of-21 from the field.
"It's really unheard of. I didn't even know that's what it was," Prince said. "I've gotten good shots. I've been able to attack the offensive glass."
Iguodala threw down an emphatic jam with his right hand for an 8-4 Sixers edge. Philadelphia led by as many as seven in the period and Miller ducked in for a layup for a 25-19 lead, which was the margin after the opening quarter.
The Sixers pulled away in the second with eight consecutive points. Williams threw a wrap-around pass near the baseline to Jason Smith for a jam and a 37-29 margin. Williams then jammed on a breakaway, and after Rodney Carney sank a three-pointer, Williams ended the spurt with a free throw, moving the cushion to 43-29 with 4 1/2 minutes left in the half.
Wallace was whistled for a technical foul with 5.2 seconds remaining, and the Sixers held a 46-36 lead at the half.
Hamilton and Billups were a combined 3-for-18 from the field with five turnovers in the first half.
"At halftime we said 'listen, settle down, settle down, we're going to get what we want, slow down on offense, speed up on defense,' and we did that," Billups said.
