Final Score: San Antonio 86 - Phoenix 105
Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Raja Bell exploded for 27 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including 5-of-7 three-pointers, and the Phoenix Suns emphatically staved off elimination with a 105-86 rout of the San Antonio Spurs in Game 4 of their Western Conference quarterfinal.
San Antonio still holds a 3-1 lead in the series, and can clinch a spot in the next round with a win Tuesday in San Antonio.
Boris Diaw had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Suns, who played without swingman Grant Hill, who sat with a nagging groin strain. Steve Nash had 15 points, and Shaquille O'Neal added 14 points and 12 boards for Phoenix.
Tony Parker scored 18 points after pouring in a career-high 41 in San Antonio's Game 3 win. Tim Duncan had 14 points and 10 boards for the Spurs, who trailed by 21 after the first quarter and never came back.
Despite winning three of four regular-season matchups, the sixth-seeded Suns struggled after a painful double-overtime loss in Game 1, and two relatively easy San Antonio wins in Games 2 and 3 left Phoenix staring down elimination in Game 4.
"We were kind of frustrated we lost those three games," Diaw said. "We've always been feeling we can beat them. We look at Game 3 and it looks like whatever they do they're going to beat us and we can't do anything against them. We look at this game and it's the other way around."
Bell and the Suns set the tone early, as he scored the first seven points for the club and Phoenix opened the game with an 11-1 run. That lead grew to 20-5 after Leandro Barbosa dropped in consecutive baskets and, after two Spurs baskets cut the deficit to 11, Phoenix ripped off 10 straight points.
Nash drained a three on the run, and two Gordan Giricek free throws put the Spurs in a 30-9 hole with 2:47 left in the first. The Suns led 34-13 after one quarter, and San Antonio never recovered.
"They jumped on us early," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "They were very aggressive, very focused. We never recovered from that."
The Spurs offense got on track for a bit in the second quarter, cutting to within 12 points on a Manu Ginobili jumper with 4:55 remaining. Phoenix went off on another run, this one a 12-0 spurt and a Diaw layup pushed the Suns ahead 61-37 with 1:33 left.
Ginobili, who scored 20 points in Game 3, was held to 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting.
The Suns led 65-43 at the intermission, and their lead topped 30 points in the anticlimactic second half. A Nash jumper gave the Suns a 79-49 lead with 5:52 to play in the third, and Phoenix led 93-65 on a Barbosa three in the final seconds of the quarter.
Barbosa added 15 points off the bench for Phoenix.
The Suns' lead topped out at 32 points early in the fourth quarter, as a Barbosa three pushed Phoenix up 101-69 with 9:29 remaining. The only excitement down the stretch came when Suns head coach Mike D'Antoni was ejected with 3:38 left after yelling at the officials.
San Antonio was held to 39 percent shooting from the field, including 4-of-11 from behind the arc.
