The LSU Tigers and Florida Gators get ready for a big SEC battle tonight
LSU is a 3 ½-point favorite at home with a Total of 151. ESPN will have this game on the backend of Super Tuesday, beginning at 9 pm ET.
The Tigers are 11-1 in the SEC and have wrapped up the West Division and are now trying to procure the best record in the entire league.
Florida, on the other hand, is locked in a three-way struggle at 8-4 with Kentucky and South Carolina in the East, and has a rugged assignment in the Bayou to keep pace with the leaders.
The Gators might need a couple of upset wins to secure a tournament berth. This one would certainly help.
LSU (23-4, 10-8 ATS) is looking for its first SEC regular season crown in three years, when they went to the Final Four. Holdovers from that club have made the difference for the Tigers.
Marcus Thornton has been an important cog, especially lately, averaging over 24 points per game in the last six. Guard Garrett Temple has been a steady performer all season and Bo Spencer is back after missing a pair of games.
Tasmin Mitchell is an athletic frontcourt performer and collectively they have helped the Tigers win 11 consecutive SEC games (6-4-1 ATS) since losing the opener at Alabama.
First year coach Trent Johnson, who wouldn’t have been here if Stanford had not been so slow on contract talks, has brought an everyday approach to Baton Rouge basketball and his players have responded.
"We just want to win the next game," Johnson said after the Tigers held on to beat Auburn 79-72. "I'm happy with the way this team has handled the situation with everything that's surrounding them.
LSU has a history of success off a home conference win with a 39-17 ATS mark.
Florida’s in a dogfight, with every contest crucial to trying to earn a bye in the SEC tournament. The Gators (21-6, 11-9 ATS) have lost their bite on the road in the conference, losing three in a row and four of five.
What has happened in Florida’s losses is too many players beside Nick Calathes don’t show up. However, the Gators are 6-1 ATS versus good defensive teams holding opponents to 42% or less shooting after 15 or more games.
The Tigers are 18-1 and 6-4 ATS at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center and 26-11 ATS when they score 75 to 80 points, which the oddsmakers suggest might be their score.
Over the years, coach Billy Donovan’s teams have been known to step up and are 18-9 ATS in road games playing teams with a win percentage of 80% or higher past the midpoint of the season.
One final note, LSU is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.
