Basketball writer Kevin "Kevo" Danna gives us a realistic look at the game flow, facts, stats and his keen explanation after Stanford fought it is way to a 57-52 win over the Virgina Cavaliers on Wednesday night.
Stanford came through in a big way, defeating the Virginia Cavaliers by a score of 57-52 en route to the Cancun Challenge Championship Game against the Kentucky Wildcats. With this victory, Stanford is now above .500 for the first time this season. Virginia, who was picked to finish 11th in the ACC, has a lot of experience and is coached by Tony Bennett.
One key part of the game was the great start that Stanford got off to. In their 2 losses, they had been a mess out of the gates, falling behind 7-2 to USD and 23-9 to ORU. Falling behind 2-0, 4-3, and 7-6, the boys from "The Farm" stormed out to take a 16-9 lead. As they let the initial lead slip, this gave them confidence that they were the better team on th floor. You could thank Drew Shiller and Jeremy Green for the hot start and for helping Stanford begin six of six from beyond the arc, mostly because of those two fellas. They had the open looks from long distance, and they were enormously lethal. To know when to shoot and when not to shoot will continue to become paramount for this young Cardinal team.
Stanford did a great job of revolving around perimeter. Surely, a few Cavaliers got open looks, but defenders like Mann, Shillerm and Fields did a very good job at rushing the open looks and forcing Virginia to go 4-18 from 3-point land. Actually, Stanford's defense was the deciding factor for the Cardinal today, along with the shooting touch for the majority of the game from the charity was essential. Stanford was too aggressive for Virginia as they forced thirteen turnovers, maybe none bigger than one they got in the final minute to keep Virginia from getting back in the game.
To carry on with the defense, Jack Trotter's play was really impressive. He was too substantial down low. Off the inbounds game in the 2nd half, Coach Bennett attempted to pull a quick Mike Scott down low and was freed up about 3 feet from the hoop, Scott tried to pasteurize Trotter, however Jack held his ground and was fouled hard enough to send him to the free throw line for two shots rather than one. He also did a good job down low boxing out other big men from grabbing rebounds.
