College Basketball - Rutgers upends Rider in OT, 80-70

Junior College transfer James Beatty had a night to remember. Beatty scored a career high 21 points to help Rutgers to an 80-70 overtime win vs. Rider.

Beatty made six of eight shots from three point range and had 4 assists and 4 rebounds. Forward Jonathan Mitchell added a career high 17 points for the Scarlet Knights, which improved to 7-2, the best 9 game start in Coach Fred Hill's term.

"I believe he had 7 games in junior college, where he made five or more threes," Rutgers' coach said during the postgame press conference. "Therefore, he is certainly a capable shooter. He also distributes the ball actually well. He got some open looks and he buried them tonight."

The Scarlet Knights (7-2) didn't make a field goal in overtime, but they went 10-14 from the free throw line. As Rider (7-5) missed all of its 8 shots from the field during over time.

Ryan Thompson lead Rider with 26 points. Mike Ringold added 12 points and 12 rebounds. This game was close throughout the whole game; with Rider taking a 68-66 lead on a lay up by Novar Gadson with 2:35 left to play. Beatty responded with a three-pointer and Rosario, made a free throw as Rutgers took a 70-68 lead. After some failed possessions by both teams, Thompson scored on a put back with 12.7 seconds remaining to tie the game 70-70.

Mitchell had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but his attempt from six feet out was short. Hill said, "We have clean up the boards. They had eighteen offensive rebounds. That is something we have got to work on. We have worked too hard at this. We just are not very big and we were a little tired.'' As overtime was anticlimactic, along with the Broncs to miss every shot and Rutgers to overcome some free throw shooting woes at the end, the Scarlet Knights got their first win against a team with a winning record this season.

Hill said, "They scored 31 points in the 2nd half, and shot 37 percent, then they didn't score in overtime. I can't talk a lot about their defensive performance, as I stated earlier with Beatty."
