With almost 7 minutes gone in the first half, nobody expected that Mercer guard, James Florence, would score 24 points.
Actually, the question was whether the Bears would score vs. Alabama. As Florence made the first of two free throws with 13:10 remaining in the first half at Coleman Coliseum on Wednesday, this stopped the bleeding of Bama scoring 19 straight points to start the game.
Alabama resisted a couple of Mercer runs later, including one that cut Bama's lead to just 9 points. However, the Tide rode a career high 27 points by JaMychal Green and a tenacious defense to go on and win 97-71. The final margin was similar to the one built at the start of the game.
Mercer cut the Alabama lead to 36-27 with less than 3 minutes remaining in the first half, but at the intermission Alabama had a lead of 45-31 and the Bears never got to a single digit deficit. Bama led by as many as 26 points late in the game.
Green scored his 27 points in only 26 minutes of play. The Sophomore forward had a game high 13 rebounds to lead Bama to a 41-32 advantage on the boards.
This win improved Alabama's record to 8-4. Mercer fell to 4-7 on the season. Bama will return to action in a week, to host Tennessee State at 7:30 pm on December 30th. Anthony Grant, Head Coach for Alabama, is giving his players time off for Christmas, and the team will return on Sunday evening.
Alabama's defense forced 16 turnovers, including 9 by Florence. Bama only had 9 turnovers. The Tide scored 25 points off of the turnovers, as Mercer scored just 6 points.
Mikhail Torrance the senior guard had 14 points and 7 assists, junior guard Senario Hillman had 14 points and 8 rebounds, and freshman forward Tony Mitchell had 11 points off the bench.
Coach Grant said, "I thought that our defense set the tone. We challenged their team and we had good effort and energy from start to finish. I thought that we played very unselfishly, we played together and played hard. l think that is the way we need to play in order to win."
Grant said that he thought the key was getting the ball to Greenl. "We have to understand that the ball needs to go inside. JaMychal needs to get touches. He had fifteen shots and I do not know how many other touches. When we get the ball inside, this opens up the perimeter."
Green's night included him going 11-15 from the field. He scored ten points when Bama built a 22-2 lead. His previous high was 24 points against Arkansas last year.
Grant was very happy that the Tide had 21 assists. Torrance had 7 and Anthony Brock had 5.
Alabama made 34 of 69 attempts from the field, 49.3 %. Alabama held Mercer to 23-54 on field goals, 42.6%.
