The Army Black Knights finished a 2 game losing streak by rallying to overcome Brown, 59-51, at the Christl Arena in West Point, N.Y. Army has won 10 games in 4 straight seasons for the first time since 1975-1979 seasons.
During the first half, Army played aggressively and shot poorly but was able to build a five point lead at the 12:40 mark on a layup by Eric Zastoupil. With 9 minutes remaining, Brown took a one point lead on a three pointer by Garrett Leffelman. The teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the half with neither team leading by more than 3 points. However, the Bears scored the last 4 points of the half to take a 28-25 lead.
In the second half, Brown promptly doubled their lead on a three pointer by Adrian Williams. The Black Knights were able to tie the game two times, but didn%u2019t retake the lead until Julian Simmons made a three pointer to give Army the lead, 44-42, with 10:45 left in the game. Simmons went on to lead the Cadets in scoring with 16 points. Army shot better later in the game, and took control of the game when they built an eight point lead through the seven minute mark. At that moment, Brown was shooting a worthless 29% from the field and watched three pointer after three pointer miss the mark in the final minutes.
Army built its biggest lead of the game, 59-49, when Josh Miller made 2 free throws with just over a minute left. The Black Knights outrebounded Brown 44-39 and force 11 turnovers while only committing 5 themselves.
A pleased Zach Spiker, first year head coach for the Black Knights with a 10-4 record, said, "Obviously, our record is great for our boys to have confidence, but more significantly; I think we've had a number of really good practices and we've improved. The games are certainly what we are judged on and we have won more than we have lost, but I think we have improved. I am very happy with where we are at, regardless of our record." Army will tip off the Patriot League on Saturday when they travel to play Colgate. Brown, 6-10 , was led by Tucker Halpern with 13 points. Next up for the Bears is a trip to Quinnipiac on January 11th.
