Ohio State is going to miss its leading play maker. Today, junior guard, Evan Turner confirmed his plans to enter the NBA draft.
One of the best college basketball players in the nation is set to try his talent at the next stage. At a four o'clock press conference at Value City Arena, Ohio State's star player, Evan Turner, publicized that he'll skip his senior year and enter the NBA draft.
The 6'7, 210 pound Turner was heading to the NBA after his sophomore season but decided to return, saying he wanted to be remembered as a player who helped OSU on his way to the league. During the summer, after he changed positions to point guard, Turner blossomed at his new position and helped the Buckeyes win a piece of Big Ten Conference and tournament title.
He is expected to be one of the top 3 picks in draft this year. Turner leaves as one of the most adorned players in the history of OSU's program. He brought home the biggest individual award when he received the Naismith Trophy on Sunday. The award is given yearly to the top player in the nation and Turner is the first Buckeye to win it.
In addition to being named as the most valuable player of the Big Ten, the player of the year by Sporting News and a 1st team All American. In all, he received 5 player of the year awards. He is also nominated for the John R. Wooden Award that will be given in Los Angeles on Friday.
The Chicago native led the Big Ten this season in rebounding (9.2 per game) and scoring (20.4 points per game) and led his team with 5.9 assists and 2.0 steals per game despite missing 6 games after breaking two vertebrae in his back in December. He finished 15th on the all time Ohio State scoring list and is the only Buckeye to score 1,000 career points, 500 career rebounds, 150 career steals and 400 career assists.
Turner's career finished with 2 missed 3 point attempts against Tennessee during their sweet sixteen matchup. After the game, he was ambiguous about his future plans but said it'd be hard to depart after that loss.
After losing to the Volunteers, Thad Matta, the head coach said he wouldn't talk Turner out of leaving early. Thad Matta said that he had confidence that Turner would make the best decision for him and his family.
